I have a pekin female who decided she wanted to be a momma (I was under the impression pekins did not do this) Anyway sometime last month she hoarded up about 19 eggs!
Yesterday they started hatching, as of today she is walking around with 12 little babies following her. She left 7 eggs on...
Well I had a friend of a friend bring me 5 babies to add to my flock. She dropped off box and left.
As I was pulling them out of box I noticed one had a beak that is not lined up, not sure if the jaw was injured or what.
Suggestions???
Has anyone seen this before?
What should I do?
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with using a chicken to hatch duck eggs?
I have a hen who loves to be mommy more than she likes to lay eggs. In decemeber I tried to hatch to pekin eggs in an incubator, with no luck :-(
The beginning of Jan my motherly hen went broody again...
So...
While driving my husband to work this morning at 5 a.m., after I dropped him off, (of course) as I was heading back home I saw a chicken on the side of the road. Stopped and she is obviously a meat bird, I am going to assume fell off a transport truck ???
I wrapped a towel around her and...
out of 6 eggs 5 have hatched great (under hen)
last egg has a crack and little hole in it, I can hear little peeps coming from it,
it has been like this for at least 4 hours...
How long before I should help it out... or should I ???
Will the hen?
I have a hen who went broody a while back, April 1st, I gave her six eggs to sit on. (None of which were hers) We put her nest in a covered fenced box (4'x4') with her own food and water and kept her in the big coop with all the other chickens.
Today her first egg hatched!
1) I thought I...
Ok, I am new to letting hens do this the natural way ;-)
I have a hen who really was showing us she wanted to be a mama... so we picked out 6 good looking eggs and let her keep them.
We have a large cage (4x4) inside the coop, we moved her nest and gave her, her own food and water in there...
Ok, we have some experience with chickens, and thinking we want a couple of ducks. :-) ( I just love ducks!!!)
My questions is if I get a new batch of chicks and a few ducks at the same time... has anyone housed ducks and chickens together?
Will they fight? get along?
Any ideas, thoughts or...
Today we just found a stash of three eggs, one of our hens is laying while out free ranging for the day.
With in the last week, she has not been laying consistently in her box. There was two days in a row with no egg, and then egg, and then another day with no egg... so today we found three...
Ok, I have a roo that was born the 1st of April, so he is just over 5 months old.
I bought two hens from a guy who did not know exactly how old they were or if they were laying or not. He had a fenced area with about 10-15 hens, he said they were all born this year, some were laying already...
Question...
If I have two separate flocks, and house them in two separate coops, but let them all free range for the day, when night time comes will each flock return to their "own" coop?
Will they fight with each other during the day... or being able to go where ever they want during the day...
Well so far I have not given my chickens any vaccines... actually had not thought about it, till I was reading about buying baby chicks from hatcheries and they offered vaccines.
I am not a strong advocate of vaccines, so I am wondering what others do or do not do and why?
Thanks for your...
We initially thought she was a she, and started calling her Krystal, but something is telling me she is a he, and we should be calling him Chris... ;-)
Any thoughts?
chick is somewhere in the 6 week age range, and have no idea what breed or mix of.
Is it normal for a hen's egg to change sizes? Or should I assume a different hen laid this one?
The egg on the right is the size we have got for the last seven days in a row. Then today I found the one on the left in the same nest that Candie has been laying in. But this egg is huge...
Out of our 30+ mix babies, "lucy" has really become a favorite. Her favorite place is perched on my husbands shoulder. :-)
Does she still look like a she? ;-)
Thanks!
Ok, lets see if I can explain myself well... sometimes my thoughts in my head do not come out verbally they way I want them too. lol
In making plans for permanent coop...
I am thinking of inside building, being 11x12.6 which is 138.6 sq ft.
Then I want to build a connected fenced in area...
How old/size should chicks be before putting them in a coop with older ones. Will bigger/older ones pick on babies? I have one roo who is almost 5 months old, and two hens that are about the same age.
I have 30+ babies that I do not know sex of yet, (ringed them and it showed 19 girls and...
