Hello. Over the next months we will be relocating about six hours away (to Arkansas). We have 31 (3 are bantams) chickens, 5 and counting ducks, two geese, 3 goats, and of course, dogs and cats. I think the dogs, cats, and goats will be easy. But the bird hauling sounds like it will be, um...
We live in Texas, and the weather is super crotchety here in the spring and fall...
I was curious as to how much wind a tall chicken coop made of hardy plank could withstand? Thanks!!!
Our flock of eight hens used to give us six-seven eggs a day. Now we get one-three eggs a day. It was a mystery until this morning our oldest hen was caught rolling a egg out of the duck pen. Later we found a broken duck egg with all the contents eaten. In the chicken pen. We think...
So I was thinking about raising some free-range chickens. However, we have a very active dog who free-roams the property...and loves to chase things like rabbits. There is absolutely no way to keep this dog inside a fence, so if the answer to my question is "no", there will be no free-ranging...
So we just butchered a Pekin duck, only to discover bumblefoot all over his right foot!! he had been limping for a few days, but we thought he had broken his foot or something. This may seem like a strange question, but is he still safe to eat? He was on no medications and never had been...
So we have this chicken named Kludd. She's a two and a half some-odd year Buff Orpington hen. Whenever she gets ticked off, she makes a sound like this:
"BRAAAAAAGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Is that Crowing???? I've heard that hens can learn to crow...is that what Kludd's doing?
Thanks!
We're getting our house renovated, and tomorrow the workers are going to turn off our house's power! We have four day old quail in the house, in an old fish tank in a brooder...how can we keep our babies warm?
Thanks!
A few weeks ago, fifteen quail eggs that we ordered came in the mail!! We put them in a Hova-Bator incubator. Mid-incubation period, when we candled them, TWO of them were proven fertile...we THOUGHT. So far, quite a few of them probably are infertile, and one, on candling day, had a blood...
We ordered 24 hatching eggs to be shipped the week of the 17th. All of our birds except 1 have been immunized for Marek's (or to prevent the symptoms) but these are our first chickens to hatch. Should we vaccinate them? If so, how do we vaccinate day-olds?
I hope I'm putting this in the right section.
I was just curious about something...
A couple years ago, early or mid 2012, one of our chickens, Kludd (named after the villain Gahoole owl haha) was acting very strangely one day, just standing around, squinting her eyes, moving very slowly...
OK, first of all, this isn't an emergency. But I'm trying to write a play about a vets' office, and I have a few questions for anyone who knows...
1.) How many animals do vets see in a day, on average?
2.) Which animals do vets see the most?
and
3.) What problem do vets deal with...
So we have this buff duck, Luna, who's been acting pretty strange lately- she hasn't been moving too much, or laying eggs. We thought she was egg bound, so we posted a thread in the emergencies area- but it turned out she was not. So a few days later, when she's still acting strange, but...
Hi
We have sort of a dilemma going on- we have a duck who seems to be trying to lay, and nothing's coming out.... but she's taken three poops, and we don't think we can feel anything under her butt fluff!!! We have her in a hot bath. She is eating greens eagerly. But I have a serious...
Today our buff duck laid an egg with what looked like an egg that had just started forming a shell. She laid this morning and they all eat breeder feed. Could it be stress? We got a soft shelled egg about a week ago too and she looks normal. Is this a problem?

Hi,
Kludd, one of our Buff Orpingtons, seems to have gone totally broody- she laid yesterday and sat on hers and all the other birds' eggs all day long, and due to her persistence, the others had to climb on top of her to lay their eggs. This morning, she's still on that box; we brought her...
Far away, in the Backwoods of Olde, a lone chicken coop lies. A circular yard sits silently around it in the stillness of the shadows of the early morning. Then, as the first pink stripe of dawn fans out across the sky, and the last owl and raccoon hole up in their dens after a long night, a...
Hi,
We have a pullet that we suspect is partaking in vermiculture (we think she could have a case of the worms). We're going to get some injectable-form Ivermectin for all the girls (and boys-gulp), but we don't know how long we use it for to kick this vermiculture hobby in the rear...
