Just curious, I know they swallow grit and it stays in the gizzard until it wears out. But what happens if they get too much grit in their food or swallow something small that isn't grindable (like a pencil eraser)? Will the gizzard let the unwanted "grit" pass through, and if so will it pass on...
If it isn't too much hassle can we get a location field next to the price field for buy-sell-trade threads/posts. It would make browsing the listings much easier as many posters don't put the location in the title or first line, as things are every post must be opened and read in full to [maybe]...
Just curious how many local breeders vaccinate chicks.
After loosing my chicks last year and looking into the Marek's vaccine I realized that it has a very steep economy of scale at the low end, which is unfortunate as Local breeders fit my needs/wants much better than large hatcheries.
(I don't...
Does anyone know of a source that lists where diseases are known to be common in the USA? (A visual, like a cell phone coverage area map would be best, but a simple list updated in the last decade would suffice.)
I see all the descriptions and treatment/prevention info on diseases and all of...
This isn't a "how to boil eggs" thread. (I have done lots of research on that. Egg pH, CO2 [fresh eggs have a lot, it's acidic], and moisture evaporation seem to be the primary factors there.)
Anyway.
My flock is completely mixed breeds, that is no two chickens are of the same breed. I've...
I want to find some local folks(county or two radius) that will go in on an order of chicks,(as I want 5 not 25) but I don't know what the appropriate or preferred forum would be.
I see:
"Raising baby chicks"
"Chicken breeders and hatcheries"
"where am I? Where are you?"(under the social...
Just curious, does free ranging reduce leg problems? (especially using a broody hen so it's a day one free range) I always hear about fast growing meat bird leg problems but not what those problems actually are.
I know sun makes a big difference in vitamin D production and thus calcium...
I may get a lively discussion out of this one.
First, by utility breeders I mean breeders who put color and some superficial traits in second place when selecting birds for breeding.(Visual is still selected for, but not strictly, or without the first place traits.) Utility first place traits...
I've been weighing my 6 new chicks about every two weeks and recording their mass in google docs spreadsheet. They are currently 19 and 20 weeks old and last weighed on Fri July 6, 2012. All different breeds. All pullets, though I'm about 10% unsure on the marans due to an awful voice, huge...
Has anyone tried feeding malted grains? I found a couple threads on fermented feed and full green sprouts but those are quite different end results from malting, which is sprouting just enough to develop the enzymes that release more of the seeds' nutrients for use.(by the plant or whatever eats...
Each time I click "list this" in the breeds section the selection window pops up fine but when I click submit I get, "There was a problem submitting this to the server. Please try again."
I've tried different breeds, logging out & in, closing the browser, clearing history, and all of that...
