    Pecking holes in the eggs??!!

I have one hen that seems to regularly peck a hole at the top of her egg- just enough to break the shell, but not deep or wide enough to harm the insides. Why is she doing that? I also have a Wyandotte that is one year old now and still not laying! Is that normal?

I just introduced two barred rocks (they had been laying at their 'old' home) to my two wyandottes (who have never layed...) about 6 days ago and they are stressed (the wyandottes have been a bit mean, but I have just put the dominant hen into a cage as was recommended in another thread and I am...

I read a thread that said eggs do not last as long if you wash them. Why? I can only imagine that you should wash them before you eat them- right? How do you wash them? I am hoping my hens will lay soon and I will have to start worring about this

I was just watching my little flock when I noticed my rooster has a very raw looking neck and there are a lot of feathers missing!!! Then I saw one of my hens pull out one of his neck feathers and try and eat it!! I was shocked. Then she pulled out another- he did not even try and fight her off...

How do you tell a male from female?

In the spring I ordered 4 chickens and have been raising them ever since. Last week one of my 'ladies' started crowing :o and so we had to find him another home (out on a nice farm instead of here in the city...). I kept telling my husband- it cannot be a male because it looks just like those...

    Orange mites?

I was looking at one of my 'ladies' a couple of days ago and noticed a few little orange mites/bugs crawling on her skin under her feathers. Is this normal? Is there a dust or medicine I should be applying? I only saw 4-5, but I am worried that this is the beginning of a big problem.

    Chickens and Kids

I have just gotten 5 chickens for my kids to take care of . I am a bit concerned about diseases (like salmonella) that they might get from the chickens- I have been a bit carzy about them always washing their hands after being near them... Is there anything I need to worry about? Am I...

    Why raise a hen house?Help!

I am trying to figure out the best design for a hen house (4-6 chickens) for a cold climate. I was wondering if I should build a coop that is above the ground- all the pictures I have seen have the coop 6" to 3' off the ground. My concern is the insulation in the winter-closer to the ground...
