    Medicating water

I have 4 little ones and 2 older hens. I need to treat the little ones with corrid. Can my 2 older hens drink the same water? I'm also planning to supplement with extra vitamins after treatment. Can the older ones have this as well? Thanks

What's the Longest Amount of Time You've Ever Waited for a Hen to Lay Her First Egg?

I have a 10 month old hen (SLW) that hasn't started laying yet. I was just wondering how long a hen can go without laying her first egg. If they don't lay eventually, won't they have problems?

My Molting Chicken Has Turned Mean - Is This Normal?

I have a hen going through her first molt. (This is my first molt as well) She lost about half of her feathers last week and has lots of pin feathers starting to appear. I have two other hens that should molt this season, but they haven't started yet. A couple of days ago she started getting...

    Ivomec treatment 1% injectable

I have instructions for Ivomec 1% injectable solution to be given 4cc per gallon of water for 2 days. Does anyone know if this has to be repeated after 10 days like other wormers? Also, do I have to throw out eggs, and if so, how many days? Thanks - there's so much conflicting information out...

Can dogs get round worms from chickens?

I saw one worm (round worm) in my chicken's poop yesterday and we are going to be treating all 5 of them today. My question is, can my dogs get this or is it animal specific? Sometimes they eat the chicken poop that's out in the yard. Any comments would be appreciated.

Do young pullets lay around more than older hens?

I have 2 new pullets about 3 months old. I raised 3 hens last year, but I was new to chickens and didn't let them free range every afternoon like I do now. Those older hens never stop scratching and pecking around, but the little ones do this for a short while and then find a nice comfy spot...

    My egg bound chicken story

It was a beautiful Sunday morning and I was out on the back porch with my coffee watching my chickens wake up and come down out of the coop. One of our chickens, a red star named Gingerbread, lays an extra large to jumbo sized brown egg every morning like clock work. I saw her come down for...

Do you see more intestinal shedding when pullets are recovering from coccidiosis?

I have three 10 week olds. They all had bloody poop and I treated with corid. Two of them never acted sick and one seemed a little tired. They're all getting over it. I'm seeing little to no blood in the poop, but I am seeing almost daily intestinal shedding under the roost at night. It...

Slow to feather young chicken - is this normal?

I have a 10 week old young gold sex link chicken that I bought as a pullet but that everyone is telling me is a cockeral. I have no experience with cockerals, so I'm not sure if this is normal. He has bare spots at the base of the tail where the tail feathers are coming in. Also, except for a...

Golden buff sex link that is almost all white - can this be a pullet?

This is my new golden buff sex link. I guess it was dumb of me to pick the lightest colored one when choosing a sex link, but I thought she was the prettiest. Can anyone tell me for sure if this is a pullet? Thanks!

What to feed my one year olds and my new 10 week olds

I have 3 one year old hens and I feed them Layena plus omega 3 pellets. I'm getting 2 ten week old pullets tomorrow and want to know if they can eat this feed too. The website says to not feed it to pullets younger than 18 weeks. What can I feed both of them at the same time? Thanks!

Here are are the symptoms - any help would be appreciated

I have a 39 week old pullet who is moving very slowly and laying down all the time. She seems to be getting weaker every day for the past 2weeks. She's eating and drinking. I give lots of treats and good layers feed. They free range for at least a few hours every day, sometimes longer. The...

Mystery! Thin egg shells in young hen for no apparent reason

I have a red sex link who laid her first egg in September of this year. She has given me an extra large to jumbo sized egg every day since she started laying. The last egg she laid was very pale, almost peach in color instead of her normal brown. Then she skipped laying 2 days in a row...

Help! Can a pullet get eggbound with a first egg?

I have a 27 week old campine. She hasn't started laying yet, although her comb has started to develop. She is walking (almost waddling) around slowly with her wings and tail down. When she walks around, her tail kind of pumps up and down. She is sitting down often. Her vent is clean as well as...

HELP! signs and symptoms of coccidiosis?

I think my golden campine might have coccidiosis. She's 27 weeks old and she had it when she was 8 weeks old and then again about 6 weeks later. I thought we didn't have to worry about it anymore because she's all grown up now, but she's acting funny. Before when she had it, she seemed very...

    If Looks Could Kill

I had a handful of worms for my hens, but Gingerbread (the one on the right) scarfed them all down in a matter of seconds, and left none for anyone else. She even took Blue's (the one on the left) out of her mouth as she was trying to savor it. The look she's giving to Ginger says it all.

I have a pullet with an "untucked" wing

I have a red sex link around 21 weeks old (not laying yet, but soon). She has a wing where the long bottom feathers don't tuck up under the rest of the wing, but hang down. We got her when she was 8 weeks old and noticed it a few weeks later. It gets more noticable as she gets older. It...
