This chick is approx 6 weeks old. It is a mutt (I think it is out of an SBE (Super Blue Egg Layer : white leghorn x Ameraucana) x Cream Legbar roo). I thought it was a girl based on how it was developing (tail feathers came in quickly) but its comb is redder than I would like and I am nervous of...
Just picked up a new rooster and am scared he might have scaly leg mites. He goes into quarantine when I get home with him - but I do not have any Vaseline. Can I use bag balm on his legs? Or is that too strong?
Last year I had one hen hatch 26 "barnyard mix" (from our flock) eggs. A lot of the roosters were birchen looking and some had beautiful red - but nearly all the hens were black. This year we had two hens hatch out babies - and again what isn't mottled looks like it will be mostly black. I love...
I free range my flock - does anyone know if I can safely lime my pastures or will my chickens be harmed free ranging in freshly limed pastures?
Thanks!
I have a three year old Royal Palm hen that started to act slightly uncoordinated/drunk and now is having trouble walking. I separated her from the flock and put her in a pen with food and water. She has no real other symptoms. Her feathers look fine, she looks healthy - no sign of injury. I did...
I am thinking about getting some Barnevelders. They are beautiful birds and based on their breeding I would guess they are friendly? I had heard their egg color used to be dark like marans and welsummers but now is not so much. Anyone have any actual experience with this breed and can share...
it is quite possible she is a mix - I might have thought she were pure ancona but for her legs.... which distinctly resemble my houdans.... (sorry she is sideways lol - I wish there was an easy option to fix that!)
I did a somewhat random hatch of eggs and got 5 roosters that look like this:
I am pretty sure mom is a silver spangled hamburg.... a couple are feather legged (daddy = black copper marans?? or could be bantam mottled cochin)
a couple are clean legged have lighter legs (speckled sussex?)...
these are 8-9 wk old hatchlings from my mixed flock of chickens. Please contribute your opinions and school me on chicken genetics (I did a separate thread for the 3 speckled sussex type girl hopefuls)

These are 8-9 wks old and were hatched from eggs collected from my completely mixed flock of chickens. Do you think they are purebred (I do have 1 ss hen and 1 roo)? I think they are all pullets... what do you think?
(the 2 in the back in this pic)
I think I have gotten pretty good at sexing single combs - but I hatched out a bunch of eggs from my mixed flock and ended up
with a bunch of chicks that have different types of combs (spangled hamburg x? ee x?)
any help would be appreciated! (they are approx 5 1/2 wks in the pics)
6 wk old hatchery Polish with an unusual looking crest. (nicknamed "Mohawk") I would think it is a boy due to the shape of the feathers but I am surprised to not see any reddening in wattle/crest area (like my houdan is showing))
We lost our houdan rooster this year and were all bummed so we decided to try to hatch out some babies. We were aiming for babies from him and the 4 girls he ran with - 2 barred LF cochins & 2 creme brabanters. We figured they would lay the smallest eggs we have as they are the youngest chickens...
Are there any chickens available in moorkop or moorhead coloring in America? I know from feathersite that several breeds come in this coloring - altho the only one I can think of right now is Polish....
thanx...
They are so cute and sweet - I just don't understand why they aren't more popular
i think i have a boy and a girl! (their feathering looks the same to me still @ 10 wks - but their crests look boyish/girlish)

6 wk old houdans (there are only 2 - several pics of the same 2)
8 wk old appenzeller spitzhauben (the 6 wk old barred cochin behind SHOULD be a girl...)
So I have 6 5 week old chicks (and a 7 wk old spitzhauben) in a brooder in our workshop. Last week we started moving them into the chicken tractor during the day and then putting them back into the brooder at night. Yesterday I thought one of the creme brabanters went after me when I put my arm...
