    Lethargic chick?

So today I go into the "chick room" to go get something and one of my chicks is flapping around, twisting and turning violently, like she's having some sort of seizure. she'd lost all control and was just flailing, flipping out all over. I picked her up and she stopped and was still tense and...

    moditified pvc greenhouse plans?

i was wondering with a few improvisions, i could use plans for a cheap diy greenhouse for a chicken coop+run combo for a flock of 20-25. www.doorgarden.com/10/50-dollar-hoop-house-green-house I'm not sure what wire I would use, although we have tons of spare wire laying around. About 1/3 or...

what do you northwesterners feed your chickens?

I live around the battleground/vancouver area in southwestern washington. I've looked around for chicken food brands online such as blue seal, kent, etc., but those aren't sold anywhere near our area(nearest location was in california.... nope, not going there every month, haha!). Anyways, I...

Where to get 2014 chicks? ideas? breed suggestions?

I really want to get some chicks for 2014, although I'm not sure where to get them. I don't need show quality birds but decent looking, health birds are a must have, obviously. I only have four(a bunch of predators scavenged out hens a while ago... :c) now, and I want to get to having around 15...

Can you feed sweet mini peppers to chickens?

We buy a lot of sweet mini peppers and I love them, but I don't eat the tops of them or the seeds so I was wondering if I could toss them to my chickens. The peppers also have lots of vitamin A and C in there so I was thinking it would be a good idea. ^^

    spring cleaning tips?

I plan on doing a bit of spring cleaning soon. In my coop, some dust has accumulated in the cracks and corners. The roosts have a small layer of crusty mud on them, probably from chickens coming in with dirty feet. There's some stains on the wooden walls, etc. Anyways, got any spring cleaning...

    Attacked hen?

This evening, when I went out to close the coop door, I couldn't find my favorite hen. I started looking everywhere, and after I couldn't find her anywhere by the coop, I was devastated and assumed something took her. It's a mystery how it even happened, really. After 20 minutes of looking(it...

    Orange juice to chickens?

I was just wondering, I've been feeding my chickens a lot of veggies like carrots, lettuce, bananas, etc., because when I do, I get a couple of eggs out of them now and then. We just bought a bunch of orange juice, and I'm wondering if I could give them some in a bowl as a healthy treat?

    My chickens stopped laying...

Are barred rocks supposed to stop laying this early? I also have Silver laced Wyandottes(and another breed, don't know what they are though, feed store said they were Buff orpingtons but they are not)... a few days ago they just stopped laying. No cannibalism, but I was getting slightly slower...

    Hen laying at four months?

My barred rock pullet is only a few days away from being four months old. She's been separated from her mother so this definitely isn't her mom's. I found the skin of a shelless egg in her setup(which is in the coop, and I don't think someone would coincidentally roll a shelless egg in there...

Are these chickens really Buff Orpingtons?

Spring 2011 my mom randomly bought me some chicks(for sale at our local feed store), brought them home, we set up a little area in our bathroom etc. Three breeds, Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, and Silver laced Wyandottes. Three of each... Anyhow, the Buff Orpingtons really do not look...

    Molting or getting beaten up?

One of my Silver laced Wyandotte hens has went "downhill" ever since she got broody for the first time in early June this year. She's out of it now, but is a completely different hen than she used to be! This is her, "Pirate"(I nicknamed her that because she used to sit on my shoulder...

    Do blackberries affect egg taste?

I noticed today a few of my hens were going crazy with blackberries, having found a nice patch of them. Later that resulted in black-ish but otherwise normal poo. How will this affect the egg's taste, if at all?

    Separating mom/chick?

Okay, first off, I'd like to say hello, this is my first post, and I've found Backyard Chickens very reliable, since whenever I've been doing research Google's shown me BYC, so I guess I'll join and make my first post. I kind of feel like I'm in a room of strangers now, but, oh well. First...
