Here's my blog post on the coop we started last Saturday. We are wondering what's the best way to construct the chicken door, so that we can open, shut and lock it without having to enter or remove the run.
I'd...
I had a difficult hatch and helped a few pop out, and three of them have a blob at the umbilical cord spot. They are walking around, acting normal, and there is no bleeding. Here are some pictures.... Do you think they will survive and are there any treatment I should give at this point...
....and probably ate one of my chickens. We never found her, but we have a bird missing and a pile of feathers. So, does anyone have any suggestions? My leghorns are small enough they can jump my chain link fence. Now I don't have any proof that the neighbor's pit bull got my hen but he's...
I bought some RIR and PR chicks, about 6 weeks old. I've had them for about a week and they are still scared of me and won't eat out of my hand....... Any suggestions on how to get them to be more friendly an less fearful of me?

I have a small home, and I don't have a basement. I'd like to get into canning, but I'm having a question of storage space. Now I have an attic that I can get into, and I have a small detached garage. I'm not sure if the attic freezes or not in the winter, and I know my garage does. I've been...
We built this last summer/fall, without a whole lot of experience. We consulted some books that had pictures of coops, but no real plans or specifics. Now that I've found actual plans for sale on line, I think we will go that rout.
Here is the egg door on the back side.

Well, I went on vacation and I came home with poison ivy! I've been using some anti-ich gell on it, which does help, but is there a way to dry it out faster? I read online that you can rub the rash with alcohol to dry it out, and there are Ivy Dry products you can buy at the pharmacy, but are...
We are building a drill mounted chicken plucker, as per the design here:

Anyone else try this?
BTW, after telling a few farmers in the CSA I belong to, everyone wants to give me their extra roosters....LOL...
Greetings, we have decided to get into meet production at a larger scale and we are looking for a coop design for about 50 birds. I'm not sure if I want to do a chicken tractor or a stationary coop with a fence around it. I'm feeling that a fenced in area would be necessary to prevent wild...
Hey, we have decided to build a new coop and have a meat flock. I've looked into the cornish x rock, but I'd rather raise something that's not your boring white industrial breed chicken. What's the next best fastest growing meat bird that isn't just white? Also, how much freezer space does 25...
I noticed on craig's list that people are looking for fertile eggs. I only have two brown egg layers, and this person wants 2 dozen. How should I store the eggs, if he wants them to hatch? I only have two nest boxes (total of 6 hens) so I'd rather not leave them in the coop. Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure my roo is the cause of this, but one of my hens has lost most of the feathers on her back and her skin there is red and enflamed. Or is this normal for molting? How do I treat this? I don't have a camera, sorry!

We bought some prefab nest boxes from "My Pet Chicken" and it says I should use a clear nontoxic wood preserver on it..... Any recommendations? Bonus points if I can find it at walmart or Lowes!

I got my free calender and DVD in the mail last Friday. Boy am I not doing enough for biosecurity. I should get a pair of rubber boots and foot bath at the least.... What did you all think of the DVD?

Well, My 12 chicks are doing fine in the bathtub! The roos are starting to have pinker and bigger combs and little waddles are beginning to grow! That said, I'm getting tire of having them in the house. I've read that they aren't fullly feathered until 10 weeks, but can I put them out side...
I'm not sure where this post should go exactly, but I'm wondering what tools people are using to keep track of their chicken buisness, weither it's selling eggs, selling chicks, selling fertile eggs, or chickens for meat. What free resources are available? How do you keep track of the cost of...
I had the idea that my fuzzy buts were bored, so I took a TP tube and cut it into 4 rings, and put them in the aquarium with them to peck at. They don't play with them but they do peck at them and kick them around a bit. It does give them something to do..... anyone else try something like this...
