When using the regular egg size egg-o-meter with small Silkie eggs in a still air incubator .... do i need to adjust temp. up because bigger egg sits higher up in warmer air? i feel i should be running it on 100.5....
Anybody ? Thanks~
I now have 3 eggs from my now hen... i saw her mated three days before first egg...so i'm pretty sure the eggs are fertile . However the eggs are on the small size....not too small for first eggs...
should i wait? Is the shell too small or does nature know what it's doing???
Thanks in advance...
"HI" I have a question i'm hoping someone can answer...
Can you get a sizzle type looking chicken (smooth sizzle)from mating (no frizzle gene) regular silkie and a regular chicken? Thanks in advance ~
I have a Black Australorp pullet which has been squatting and mated by a Roo, that i'm sure is getting ready to lay any time now. A Red Tail Hawk attacked her and my silkie cockerel gave his life saving her.... she is doing alright...no wounds....it is like she was squished... i have her...

I thought my hen went broody...gave her eggs i'd been saving...she stopped setting this morning and hasn't went back to eggs,( it cold and rainy today)...are the eggs still ok, if she goes back later? or should i pull them and wait a day or two? Mainly just want to know if eggs are still...
I have a 7 month old Frizzled Silkie Rooster, which i placed in with 4 older wyandotte hens(2yrs), i'm hoping to breed them. The older hens are mean to him and he's afraid of them. He's been with them for over a month and i'm wondering if i've made a mistake by placing them together too soon...
A friend of mine gave me a chick,(one that had survived out of three). She got them at our grange co-op... she wasn't sure if it was the Australorp, or marans chick that survived, at the time she gave it to me, so i've been waiting to see if the feathers change to that 'barring pattern'...
My hen must have caught her toe on something and almost ripped it off. It's all dried out and the only thing holding it together is the bone. My husband said clip it off ... will it fall off on it's own? I feel horrible i didn't see this sooner, the toe is definitely lost. Anybody have...
I have a super fluffy splash sizzle 3month old chick..... she is getting red on her comb and mouth area...i'm hoping sizzles pullets have more of a comb than pure silkies ...because it looks it me like it's developing....
I bought 3 Ameraucana chicks yesterday at our co-op grange.... they are one week old and i have a broody silkie hen who has been sitting on an empty nest for weeks...so i stuck them under her and they took to one another no problem... i wasn't sure it would work with the chicks being over 3...
Yesterday at the co-op, i just had to pass by the baby chicks, they had WHITE CRESTED BLACK POLISH....soooooooo cute...and 25% off.... but i made it out with just the food i went in for. The cashier told me they were all female....??? do they vent sex them? wouldn't that be too costly...
Two weeks ago, I bought two 6 week old chicks, one sizzle, one silkie.... the sizzle is a little larger than the pure silkie.
Today i noted that the sizzle was really picking on the little silkie.....maybe even drawing blood...there was some pink looking feather on it's back...but i never...
I have an 8-9 month Silkie Rooster i've raised from a chick, he's getting aggressive with me lately showing off in from of the hens. He still hasn't figured out how to 'mate', and chases the younger hens(pullets), but seems to be afraid of the older hens,( he's really afraid of this small 2...
My 'China girl' is really ' China boy ' and i can't keep him. He's show quality... has 5 toes on each foot and holds his wings up high and has beautiful feathers. He's sweet but lately has gotten a little bit of an attitude. Thank you~
Lacey laid her first egg~
I saw the sweetest thing happen the other day...when my pullet Lacey went to lay her first egg...the rest of the hens gathered around her in the hen house for a while, like midwifes..... an older hen and best-pal, stayed with her the whole time. Chickens are a...
I have two four month old silkies females (got as chicks) that i plan on introducing into my flock of five hens, i've been keeping them separate, yet, they can see one another. I just recently opened it where they are all together. They keep separate, with little interaction. When the...
I let my girls free range everyday, they have their 'laying food' always available, i give them greens , mash from our local brewery, treats like hard boiled eggs(chopped up), oatmeal, yogurt, etc. and they pick at it..they used to come running... spoiled or over fed? Haha~ Maybe i need a...
I've been giving my hens mash(whole grains only no hops) from our local brewery (it's free) and they love it. I always have their ' laying food' available, but they eat very little of it(saving$$$), and they free range all day....they are laying well....they are healthy and happy.... So i...
