For a chicken that has no other symptoms that no voice? I posted 4 weeks ago about a chicken losing its voice
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/775543/chicken-losing-voice/10#post_11206028
It got *some* voice back, but not much. Still no other signs of illness. Not laying eggs still, but she...
I've tried to google, with little luck.
One of my hens (who is usually the noisest one) was making funny sounds this morning. It's like she's lost her voice. I checked a few other things:
- Comb is fine, red, healthy, standing up straight
- Eyes look clear, alert, no discharge
- No discharge...
Fairy sure the black is a roo, but I've also never had this breed, so could be wrong! both are 2 months and 10 days old.
This one is an Ameraucana.
And this one is a frizzlecauna
At what age do you clip chicks wings? My lil ones are already flying all over the place! They aren't exactly going to be able to fly over the fence (they are under 2 weeks!), but it got me thinking, when can you safely clip wings?
Mumma hen is seriously digging up the yard. She is almost manic about it. Not sure what is going on? Could it be that she doesn't have enough room for a dust bath? I wouldn't think so! Is it anxiety related? I am having to clean out their water and refill 4 or 5 times a day, no matter what/where...
We had our first lot of eggs being hatched naturally begin hatching today. They weren't due until tomorrow, possibly even later due to mumma hen spending a few hours one day off the eggs. I was caught unprepared! Turns out chicks can get through the cheap chicken wire! It didn't even occur to me...
So I went home today after being out from 10am, to find that mumma hen had gotten out of her secluded spot, and wasn't sitting on her eggs. :( I put her back, and she went straight back to the eggs, but I have no idea how long she had been off them for.
It got to 32c (89.6f) today, (it was...
I bought some chickens just after Christmas, who have been in a separate pen from my other chickens. I was getting ready to start intergrating them into the main flock in another 4 or 5 days.
I noticed a few days ago that one the the chickens was sneezing, and my son noticed the same chicken...
I have a broody hen, the second or third time in a few months she has gone broody, and by far the worst this time around. She's been sitting on eggs for 3 days now, and no matter what I do, I can't get her out. So I was thinking of buying some fertile eggs and letting her hatch them. I've read a...
I thought I posted this the other day, but when I came back to look for replies, I couldn't find the thread! So something must have gone wrong!
I have some more araucana photos to see if someone can sex them. They are 8 weeks old. Again, sorry about the photos, they were sent from me from the...
I bought some new hens the other day, 1 glw, 1 leghorn x araucana, and 5 isa browns. The glw and the isa browns are very feisty, and all the hens bar the leghorn x have bald sections. The place they were in before was a lot smaller than my run, so I was hoping it was a lack of space issue that...
Found a broken egg the other day, and another one today. Hoping its a case of accidental breaking, but just in case, I'm going to try the golf ball idea, and if I can actually do it, maybe blow out a few eggs and replace with mustard.
Has anyone had much success with either of these remedies?
I was going to pick up 2 chickens this afternoon, about 50 mins away. The heat wasn't going to be a problem, boxes in the car with the air conditioner going (it is between 35-41c today here and where we are going, so 95-105f).
Now they have offered me the rest of their flock, feed and waterers...
I am in Australia, so I know that the requirements for araucana is different from in the US. I don't really care if they are araucana or not, coz they are free, BUT, I need help with sexing.
Sorry for the poor quality photo, I asked for photos and she sent a video, so I had to screen shot the...
I have the opportunity to get some araucana chicks, approx 11 weeks old? Maybe a bit older (13 weeks?). I have a few questions.
- What will they need to eat (my other chooks are eating a poultry mix, crushed shells, and food scraps)
- They are unsexed, so how old before we will be able to tell...
Does anyone know where I can get mealworms in Australia? Do they usually sell them at pet stores? I've tried looking online at a few stores in the nearest major town to us (we don't have a petshop here), and can't seem to find anything. I thought theyd make a nice treat for my chookies.
How do you keep them cool? I realise this will seem like an odd question for this time of year for Northern Hemisphere-ers, but it is hot here! We are due for a week of over 40 celcius (umm, 104f?). It was over 32c by 9am! (89/90f). I rigged up some extra shade, and hosed the chickens and under...
Not the one thats been sick either. :(
Went to feed the chickens this evening, after being at my parents all day for Christmas, and found my white frizzle dead in the nesting box. I couldn't see any obvious wounds, but her vent area looked red and swollen. There were some eggs under her, but...
I have my girl in a hot bath as I type. She has been ago bound and nothing I've done has helped. The egg seems to be sideways. Can I somehow turn it? Yesterday I could see the egg when I opened her vent, but now it's all swollen and although I can feel it, I can't see it. I looked at prolapse...
I've done some research on types of breeds that suit my climate, and I've read the article on what to look for in a chicken when you are buying it (to make sure it is healthy), but I had a few more questions.
1. Should you only buy from reputable breeders for backyard egg layers? There is one...
