Please help me figure out what breed this little chicky girl is? She has reddish brown flush with three dark bands down her back in a dark spot on her head and her feet are pinkish yellow. Girl at feedstock thought she was a Welsummer but I don't think so.
I need some advice from experienced "chicken wranglers". We have 26 year old, non-moulting laying hens that share a large coop with 8 nesting boxes (was recommended to have one box for every 4 chickens so this should be more than ample). They free-range during the day after getting a morning...
We received a batch of chicks last night from Murray McMurray. They settled in nicely for the night and this morning my daughter and I checked on them including a check for pasting. One of them seemed to have it and a few swipes did not remove the "paste" so I took the chick inside and tried...
Long story short - my dogs got into the chicken field this morning while I was away from home and no one else was watching. Itis now 6 hours or so since the attack (I came home and found 2 dead chickens initially - inspected the rest and thought they were OK) and decided to check on them again...
We have 27 five-week olds out in the coop. A friend gave me 2 six-day old Rhode Island Reds yesterday. My daughter asked if we could please get 2 more... We needed some black or blue in the mix... So we got 1 Plymouth Barred Rock and 1 Black Austrolorp. Now Nellie and Charlotte join Carrie...
I just got our 27 chicks out of the brooder and into the coop last week (I never expected all 27 of my first batch of chicks to live!). We were at TSC this weekend and I was so close to getting a couple blue chicks...but dh said no. Then, a friend called yesterday and offered us her two 5-day...
They did fine in the coop last night and it went down to 45, but tonight it goes down to 37, and 34 the next night. Is that too cold? The coop has solid walls but on two ends there is a triangular area just covered with chicken wire so the cool air can definitely waft in and all the warmer air...
My goat pen and chicken coop share a wall. Today I was taking care of my goats and as we walked to their pen I saw a 3 foot black racer slither to the back of the pen. The goats were intrigued...kinda! Eventually, the snake made a run for it which is when we learned the wall between the goat...
About a week ago, we noticed one of the chicks had a crooked beak - "scissor beak" I have seen it called. It seems to get worse every day. I read up on it and heard stories about handing feeding the bird, giving it special deep feeding dishes, etc... Sometimes they make it, other times they...
O.K. I think I have finally loaded the photos correctly. Sorry they are not of excellent quality - my camera phone is adequate but nothing fancy...and I don't have any mad (photography) skills...
We were expecting the chicks on the 5th...got a call the night of the 2nd to say they were at...
Hi all!
I ordered some chicks from Murray McMurray - we have 16 buff orpingtons, 10 americanas, and this mystery guy! Much lighter yellow feathers and gray legs. ID thoughts? A wheaten americana? ?? They gray legs are stumping me. Thanks for any help you can provide this fledgling chicken...
Hi everyone!
