I have a silkie and a white/ gray/ red barnyard mix that I'm just stumped on. They are 14.5 weeks.
I don't hear either crowing yet, but I wonder if I'm wishful thinking.:)
Also any ideas on what mix my barnyard one is?
Thanks so much for any help! :love
My 6 month old cream legbar with beautiful feathers and a gorgeous red comb laid me a soft shelled egg yesterday. Then that night she was dead.
I palpated and felt nothing like a stuck egg, but I did find this bleeding on her vent.
Devastating to lose ANY birds, but is this a "one bird...
This one has stayed red in the face for weeks, but is impossible to catch, so I couldn't ask earlier. As time goes on, I'm more confused as to what gender it is. Especially with the darkening (black) on it's comb.
Middle tail feathers are just starting to come in- red
Hatchmates- I...
On Saturday (day 20) I had 3 perfect little chicks hatch out, and was excited to have more.
Then, Sunday, I found 3 eggs started zipping but weren't able to finish before getting stuck and dying (we live in the desert) or stepped on by the hen before they could push the egg off.
Today, Monday...
I have a set of 5 one year old hens in one small 25 sqft coop and 150 foot run.
Then, I have another small 25 sq ft coop and 100 foot run with 6 12 week old chicks.
One of my year old Reds has decided to go broody ... again, so I plan to give her some fertile eggs tonight. My problem is, I...
When we made our secondary coop, we used a pallet for the base. We filled in most of the spaces with pallet wood, but there were some holes that my husband just decided that great stuff would "work best for". Any food for thought for us? Don't want to lose these cute chicks. And have a...
So I got a Sunbeam heating pad so I could make a MHP, but it doesn't feel very ward. Itonly gets to about 80 degrees 1 inch from the pad after 3 hours of the highest setting- is that really enough for the chicks? Or did I get a dud? I'm thinking I just got a dud and need to re-buy, but wanted...
I managed to get a cockerel with my last batch of chicks. I've tried to give it away, but no one wants it on Facebook, craigslist, or ANY where else.
I've never processed on my own and it's still below freezing here, but within the next month, I need back the space that my 8 week old...
Okay, we made it to 6 weeks! The middle is a half bantam, and the other two have a cuckoo marans dad. I'm still thinking only black is a roo . . . how about you?
Okay, after spending probably 100 hours on this site in the past month, I know it is STILL slightly early to sex my barnyard mixes. However, documenting this journey is kinda fun. :)
We are at 4 weeks and a day since hatch. And I have 3 chicks.
#1 Noelle (Might be a cockerel) Black
biggest...
Okay, I know it's too early AND I have barnyard hybrids, but just for giggles, any guesses on sex? Or what they will look like when they are older? :)
I only have three- a yellow, a red, and a black that all came from brown eggs.
The roo is barred- can't decide if he is a Cuckoo Marans or a...
Day 9: We're down to 10 eggs after our 7 day candling.
My broody has stopped eating as much when I take her out of her garage broody box to go outside (twice a day). She still eats a lot of sand and rocks, but I haven't seen her eat anything else for the last 2 days, even though I've offered...
Might have been too hasty 😏 -
It's cold (down to teens Fahrenheit at night) but my one of my 5 production hens went broody. Because I *think* this will be a rare occurrence, I put some eggs under her just to see if it would work.
But since I didn't have a maternity ward (coop too small), and...
Here is my broody hen's baby daddy. And I have no experience telling the difference between barred rocks and cuckoo marans. I read it's leg color- white is cuckoo, yellow is BR. What's your take?
Hoping for some fun crosses with buff orps, EE, BR, RIR, White Leghorn, with obvious roos, but I...
Barred rock roo crossed with white leghorn, Americana’s, rhode island red, and Easter egged hens.
Will the color of the eggs be brown, tan, white, and green?
Or will they all stay tan?
Attached are the pix of the eggs I’m using for my broody chick.
I'm not allowed to have roosters in my town, so I got three, day-old chicks from the feed store to put under my broody hen. I did my research and followed all the tips I found on here about when and how to place the chicks under. After 3 days of them sleeping under her, the hen being super...
So, we have 2 adult pullets (we think they are cochins because of the feathered legs?) And then we just got these little ones from the feed store a few weeks back. They are about 2 months, but the red one is 2 weeks younger than the white (although the red is bigger).
My guess is that they...
We bought 2 from the feed store this week. They are 3 and 5 weeks respectively. So excited that my 7 year old chose them out of ANY PET she wanted. ;) Tried to post a picture, but I guess I'm still too new?
Hey Guys,
We got these beautiful chickens from someone facing a health issue and unable to care for them in October 2012 (6 months old). They both laid eggs the first 6 days they were here. Then, they apparently detested the change of feed (the old owners fed them vegetarian pellets and we...
