my easter egger isn't the smartest but she is the nicest one of the bunch. She will only lay eggs inside the bag/container where I keep the pine shavings. She chases birds in the backyard and likes to be petted. Anyone else have a chicken they think is special? What do they do?
We are moving. I currently have an A-frame tractor type coop:
coop area is 4x4 and run is 6x4.
New house has much smaller yard BUT it has a "shed" on one of the narrow sideyards. I'd like to section off part of the shed and then attach a run to it.
This is the wall of the shed that...
She's about 24 weeks old so I figured she'd start laying soon. She was acting kinda funny yesterday and today. Well she climbed on top of the bag of pine shavings - I keep it inside a black trash bag so I can close it up - and when I checked on her later this afternoon there were TWO eggs in...
I tried searching on this topic but couldn't find anything.
I had two 5 month old hens and just added a 1 year old barred rock to replace one that was attacked earlier this summer. The new girl has been here just over a week and is doing well with the group. No bullying or anything like...
I also have an easter egger, same age. They have been acting funny the last few days so I was hoping to see an egg soon. She laid it on the floor of the coop so I need to work on getting her to do it in the spot I made for her. Any tips for that? I have a 5 gal bucket with pine shavings in it...
I put this through the wall separating the coop from the run, it's about 2ft long and there is about 10 inches of clearance on either side of it to where the wall/hardware cloth is. Do you think it's too narrow for them to get up there or should i wait and see how it goes? Or should I put the...
I've had 3 chickens since early may; one of them very early on was established as the leader of the pack. she was never aggressive but she was definitely the ringleader of the group.
Today she was killed by a predator. The other two seem a bit lost without her around. Is this a good time...
I've been letting my 3 girls free-range in my back yard during the day for several weeks now. Somehow in between 2:30pm and 5:30pm something attacked my favorite hen and only left feathers and a few entrails under a low hanging tree.
She was the leader of the group, so now the other 2 are a...
I checked Dr. Google on this and couldn't seem to find anything definitive.
I'm building this: http://learningstore.uwex.edu/Assets/pdfs/A3908-02.pdf
and it just has a hole for the coop entrance. I live in the Portland, Oregon area, so it gets to freezing a bit in the winter but nothing...
One of my girls (only about 2 weeks old) jumps onto my hand if I put it in the brooder. She's very calm and friendly. Still working on the other two...
anyway, it got me thinking. Are there any particular places or ways that chickens like being petted?
Not sure what happened, her neck is bent and she's floppy, can't walk. Cheering constantly. I'm pretty sure she will die. Is there anything I can do for her?
i've got one of those plastic circle feeders with the holes all the way around it. I am at the point where I need to replenish food and clean out the brooder a bit. Should I throw the food that's in there away (it's got pine shavings and poop in it) or can I take the non-food items out of the...
I tried to search on this topic and was not successful...so pardon me if it's silly.
I'd like to end up with 3 laying hens (still deciding on breed). So should I start out with ~6, expecting that later on I will find out that some of them are males?
