    chickens and swimming pools

OK- call me crazy- but I'm trying to come up with CHEAP ways to keep my chickens cool in the prairie heat this summer. Would they be interested in something like a mud bath in a kiddie pool? Someone said on another post they like to keep cool on the wet ground. What if I filled a kiddie pool...

    Got rid of the roosters

OK- I just re-homed my roosters (2 of them) leaving me all hens. What should I expect b way of behavior? Will there be any noticeable change or will it be as simple as one hen coming to the front to manage the others? They are 11 weeks old now.

    Colorado snowstorm

Not so bad... but still had to shovel the front of the coop door to get into it. They all gave me the evil eye... "It's COLD! Close the door!"

    Coming along and newbies

Here's some quick fun picks of the flock as they grow up and explore the world around them. Obviously Red's the Roo. And in the baby pics I know the one on the right is a roo. They are 4 weeks old...the others are 9 weeks old. The little one tried to eyeball the red today when they had some...

How do you make them go home?

OK- after a week of shoo-ing them out of the coop every morning, they have finally gotten the idea that it's great to be outside (6/7 weeks old). NOW... how do I get them to want to go back into the coop when the sun starts setting?! I spent 20 minutes tonight chasing down the last 2 hens (the...

    Roo-roo and the ladies

OK- so I booted them outside to the coop/shed this week. The weather warmed up a little and at 4 and 5 weeks they still ave a 100 watt light out there with them. I may even be really nice and give them the oil filled heater when it gets really cold tomorrow night (teens again). Roo-roo...

    WyanLuv's Cuties

Hi all- here's my 3 that hatched from WyanLuv' SLW eggs. My first hatch, so of the eggs that made it through the mail system, 4 hatched, 3 lived. I was there when each of them made it out and I think they have imprinted. They go nuts when they hear me talking and try to hop out of the brooder...

    Free-CO-RIR 3 weeks old Roo

Hi all-- well, the packing peanut roo I kept to keep the girls company and in line is getting a bit too food hoggy for my liking... and since I didn't plan on keeping any roos anyway (long term) I figured I'd better rehome him now. Anyone who wants him, email or PM me and let me know. He's...

    Setting WyanLuv's SLW eggs tonight!

OK everyone-- in my first attempt at incubating, I am setting WyanLuv's SLW eggs tonight. She did a most excellent job in packaging them and they arrived ASAP (she sent them Saturday and they arrived today, Monday). They are coming to room temp on the counter today and will be in the bator by...

    Roosting height position mean anything?

I have some week and a half and 5 day old chicks. This past weekend I put a large branch in for some roosting height. Seems that the two more aggressive/leadership type birds roost on the higher portion of the branch. Does this indicate rank or just preference in how close they like to be to the...

    Burning poo covered wood shavings?

Uhm- I'm not sure where this topic belongs, but if we don't opt to compost the used pine shavings from the coop, can we burn them or would this cause a "lovely" chicken poo smell in the air?
