    moving a broody?

I have a young first time OEGB pullet that is broody (she's only 6 months old). Today is Day 10 that she has been sitting on the nest, hogging everyone's favorite box. Hubby and I left marked eggs under her and have been removing any new ones daily. We will be candling tonight if it isnt...

    poofless silkie gender

I have a 21 week old buff silkie that had all its poof feathers pulled out when I tried to introduce it to a new pen of banties. Before the de-poofing, sometimes I would think I saw streamers, then other times I would think I just imagined it. There has been no crowing, no egg, and the comb and...

    Introducing an oddball drama

I have a buff silkie that I have no clue whether it is a boy or a girl. Some days I would swear I saw "streamers" and other days I would think I imagined them. It is now 21 weeks old, and no tell tale egg or crow to give me a hint. I had it in my "for sale" pen until I could figure it out...

    fence fighting question

While in the process of moving birds to new pens, one of my bratty little OEGB roos managed to escape. He didnt go very far, just to the next pen to get into a through- the- fence- chest bumping match with one of the silkies. Unfortunately, it was the ONLY Silkie I still have any hopes of being...

    roo bachelor pad

How long can my young cockerals be in a "Bachelor coop" before they start fighting? I am currently overrun with little roos. They currently outnumber the little pullets about 4 to 1. A few are starting to mount the girls, and I dont want the girls hurt. Would it be ok to put all the extra boys...

    Age for pointy feathers

What age do pointy feathers start showing up on Bantam white cochin cockerals? I have a bunch of Frizzles that I am 90% sure they are boys, but there are 2 that are smooth feathered. Both have red combs and small wattles, but neither is crowing nor do they have any pointy feathers. They will...

    Missing chick.. ***NEW update***

How long can a 6 week old chick go without the heat lamp if I keep my house around 70*? One of my chicks escaped the brooder and is missing in the guest/ play room. I know she can't have escaped the room because the door is kept shut. There are tons of places for her to hide, but myself, my DD...

    Ideal Packing peanuts

What kinds of breeds have you all gotten as packing peanuts from Ideal? Last month, I was sent some Standard chicks with my banty assortment. I really think they might be Delawares. Has anyone else gotten anything other than the standard Sex links, RIR, or BRs as packing peanuts?

    Packing peanut breed

This is one of my packing peanuts from Ideal. 6 of these came with my replacement bantam order. They are standard sized, not banties. Since they are packing peanuts, I am assuming they are all boys, but I have no idea of the breed. Anyone have any guesses? They are 3.5 wks old.

    2 chick questions

At what age is it safe to get rid of the pebbles in the waterer? They are a pain when trying to change the water. And since I unfortunately had quite a few chicks die after shipping, I am being sent a shipment of replacement chicks. They will be about 10 days younger than the survivors from...

    no more paper towels

I guess it's a safe bet to say it's time to remove the paper towels from the brooder when the chicks manage to find the corner, kick it back, and manage to snuggle down in the shavings UNDER the paper. I wish I had my camera with me, but by the time I figured out where they were hiding, they...

    IDEAL Question

I recieved an email on Sunday saying that my order would ship on 2/15/10 (that is today!) and that I would recieve another notification once it has been sent. Well, it is 9 o'clock and I still haven't gotten anything saying it was sent. So should I assume it wasn't sent due to the holiday or...

If an EE is a mix...?

... Then what would you call the offspring of one EE parent. Say I have an EE roo and a BO hen.... would the chicks be EEer mixes, or just EEers? And if the roo was an EEer and the hen a white layer, would the resulting offspring produce blue/green eggs?
