how to feed mixed age flock?

Hi, I apologise if this has already been discussed ad nauseum. My flock is all together in one coop, spanning from six weeks to well over a year. They all go after the same bowl of food when I feed, even when I try to seperate them. I have chick starter/grower 20%, and the regular layer feed...

8 week old Marans- gender and color??

I'll try to upload a better picture, it takes forever on my computer for some reason. She (I hope) hatched out of a dark Marans egg, supposed to be black copper, but his color is strange- he is striped with black and copper all over. I have one other chick that hatched, she is all black with...

What kind of hen am I?

Okay- I finally found my camera cord and charged the battery. Forgive me for being a little picture happy today. I was given this girl along with two RIR girls in the beginning of spring. What kind of hen is she- her previous owner just called her Yellow. The younger pullets are 11 week old...

    Tractor Supply Bantams- any ideas?

I posted these pictures a few days ago- wondering if they were EE's. The one on the right I'm pretty sure is an EE- her legs are greyish and is feathering out similarly to some ameraucanas that I have (but any guesses are still welcome!) What about the one on the left? It is much smaller and...

Early maturing Buff Orp hen or....

a late maturing Roo? Big Birds cousin here just started growing a comb and wattles about 2 weeks ago, but her wattles have been more pink than her sister for weeks before that. They are 10 weeks old. The other BO that I have is still pretty yellow. I dont see any shiny hackle or saddle feathers

what do you think? Bantam EE's?

My friend picked these up for me from Tractor supply- it was the last of the chicks and I think they were all mixed up. They're bantams, we were thinking EE's, what do you think? Theyre about a week old

FREE- 2 Light Brahma Bantams- Martinsburg WV

I dont know what sex... but I'm thinking 'roos and they're kind of poo-heads, so they are FREE! They're pretty, but they aren't very nice to the other bantams, and they're very flighty. They like to dive bomb the other chicks. They're about 2 months old.

Oh no! My 5 week old chick is dying! (sour crop?)

I'm so devastated, my favorite 5 week old chick is really really sick- I think she is dying. She was just sitting hunched up in the brooder, and didn't protest at all when I picked her up and carried her into the house. Her crop is really swollen and feels gassy and liquidy. I tried to massage...

how to keep the food in the feeder?

My 5 week old Marans and Orps are hungry messy pigs. I've been using a brooder with newspapers for the bottom, and they would tip their food over in their feeding frenzy, and then just eat it off the floor. I just moved them to a wire floor brooder outside and got them one of those mason jar...

Man those things like to range

I was given hens 4-5 days ago, and I let them out to free range for the first time today. They took off! They're about 1/4 mile away right now, all over my (not so nice) neighbor's woods. I dont know why I thought they would stay in my yard... They will come back, right?

how long until new hens know their "home"

I just got 3 adult hens, and I want them to be able to free range in my yard. Do they instinctively know to go back to their coop at the end of the day, and to stick by it, or will they wander all over the place and get lost? Should I keep them in their coop for awhile before letting them out to...

Question about coop wall material... and will they eat it

Okay- I'm not sure if I should post here because I'm worried about them eating the walls, or in the coop design section because... because they're walls. I have an old storage shed that my DH's grandparents built on our property back when it used to be there property- probably in the 70's-80's...

How much headroom in run/under coop?

Okay, so my wonderful husband went and picked up a great giant hutch for my chickens. Its really (really) heavy, and was just sitting on the trailer waiting for strong men or a tractor to lift it down. Today he and his Father-in-law got it down on the ground for me. But here is my dilemma. It...

    starter crumbles and full crops?

I'm a chicken idiot- my last experience with birds was working at Petco as a teen. I have 3 chicks who are just about 2 weeks old. They seem to have really full crops, that are kind of off to the side of their chest/neck. Is that normal? All they are eating is chick starter crumbles, and I...

    Roost Q's for chicks

I'm sure this has been asked somewhere, but I couldn't find it with the search- sorry! When do the chicks need a roost? I have 3 1 week old chicks, and they like to perch on my arm (its the only thing my two Marans chicks like me for ) Also, what is a good width for chicks? These are...

    Is rabbit fence good enough?

You know, the kind that starts out with really small openings on the bottom rows, and gradually the openings get wider and wider? I'm making a pretty large run- about 100sq. ft- and I am cringing at how much that is going to cost in hardware cloth. I can get the rabbit fencing for about half...

Pictures of Standards and bantams together?

Hi, If this is in the wrong section- sorry! I am very bad at using the search, but I cant find any pictures of Bantys and Standards hanging out together. I'm getting some of each, and they'll be divided in the coop, but free ranging together. So, I was hoping to see some other pictures of...

Will this rabbit hutch work for bantams?

Hi! This is my first post on BYC- but I've been lurking for the past couple days, reading everything I can (spending alot more time than I should have, lol) Okay, so anyway, I hoping to end up with about 10 or so bantams, and have been debating on which kind of coop to build (poorly, I'm sure)...
