    Another coyote thread

We live in what is basically a clearing in the forest. We've always had coyotes around and they've never given us any real trouble--until now. Within the last month or so they've attacked a neighbor's dog, killed one neighbor's entire flock of chickens and ducks, taken 2 calves from the same...

WTB chickens age 5 months and up--Southern Middle TN

We suffered a catastrophic loss here to a stray dog and I'd like to rebuild our flock. Our LGD is getting on in years and I've taken to letting him sleep in at night. The stray took full advantage of this and dug and clawed his way into our coop where he killed 15 of our 20 chickens. Needless...

WTB hatching eggs in Southern Middle TN

Hello y'all! I'm looking for a few good eggs. I'm hoping for standard Cochins (any color), Easter Eggers, Ameraucanas, and Orpingtons (any color), but I can be tempted with anything! I don't have to have a full dozen, even just 3 or 4 will be just fine. I don't mind driving a bit for them...

    Is it safe?

My quail were infected with ulcerative eneritis 5ish weeks ago. We lost 4 before putting them on antibiotics. The survivors have been on antibiotics for 8 (9?) days now with no more illness or deaths. They're all quite perky and animated now, actually. My question is this: I have 18 quail...

    I may just cry. Really.

Ok. *sigh* Give it to me straight. Is this a cockerel? "She" is a 20ish week old blr wyandotte. I took quite a few pics, please bear with me. And please excuse the EE guy in the back. He wouldn't move. Weird shot, but I was trying to show hackle feathers.

    What is my rooster?

This little fellow was a dyed-blue (over solid white) chick given to my son for Easter. I've been calling him a red sex-link. Am I right? He's 16 weeks old in this pic.

    Cirque du Poulet :)

This coop was built for my 5yo son's pet red sex link rooster, Blue, and his two girlfriends. DS got to pick the colors...can you tell? This run was put on temporarily--they will be getting a larger run soon. Check out the rooster. He's only 16 weeks old!!!! I wonder how much bigger he'll...

    Which one, which one?!?!?!

*sigh* I have a rooster quandry. I bought 8 EE pullet chicks in the spring. Well, 3 of the 8 are cockerels. In my flock there are 10 hens and 3 roos. Tooooo many fellows. I need to rehome one of the guys. My problem is which one?! There is a definite alpha roo. There is a definite...

    Ulcerative Enteritis

Anyone have experience with this? This is what I believe the 3 new quail brought to my others. 2 have died with a third looking poorly today. After this death, I'll have 9 birds left. Has anyone treated this successfully? Would it make more sense for me to cull and begin again? Thanks for...

Gorgeous white/red 17 week old EE roo--Southern Middle TN/North AL

I have an absolutely beautiful 17 week old EE roo that needs a new home. He's just too pretty for us to process! If you can use him, he's yours! Here he is at 12ish weeks. The red on his back has solidified into a vibrant saddle and he now has grey streaks in the white. If I get my new...

Wyandotte pullet with unusually large (problematic) legs

I have a 19 week old blue-laced red Wyandotte pullet who seems to have an anatomical problem. She has a dainty, delicate body with lets larger in diameter than my EE roo's. Her legs also seem to be much longer than the other Wyandottes'. She lays down much of the time, but can stand, run...

    Lethargic adult hen--what's wrong?

I don't know if y'all remember the "Cpt. Save-A-Quail" post I made a bit ago about the coturnix and buttons at a feed store. Well, I went back 2 weeks ago and bought the coturnix. The hen is VERY big (for a Pharaoh, she's not a jumbo) and has been steadily getting more and more lethargic...

    I'm a quail grandparent! Update: #11 has hatched. :)

I have a friend who loves to incubate eggs. It's one of his most-loved hobbies. I gave him a dozen Coturnix eggs for a change of pace and so far 10 of the 12 have hatched!!!! Of the remaining 2 eggs, one has a pip and the other is silent. I'm hoping they'll pop out soon, though. The...

Check out my new bargain quail cage!!

I got this from a fellow who was getting out of the chicken business. He kept bantams in it. He had about 500 cages of different types and sizes. His prices were amazing! I paid $20 for this one!!! Time to get more birds....

For those of you who have dropping pans under your cages...

What do you put in the bottom of the pans? I've used pine, aspen, and now pelleted bedding. I'm thinking of putting odor-controlling cat litter in there. The quail won't come into contact with it. I clean the pans out every 3rd day, but there's still odor. What do y'all think?
