Husband had to shoot a bobcat this morning. Fought our cat and then would not run away from my husband. Kept trying to get the chickens. The neighbors down the road saw him yesterday afternoon. Too much time roaming in the daylight. Something must have been wrong with it. Game and Fish picking...
I have this for proofing my home made bread but as a chicken person I see it's possibilities for hatching. It holds temp. very well and humidity. It of course has no egg turner but that could be improvised.
You could turn the eggs yourself and then hatch and brood in it as well. ( small hatches)...
Only one hen has been laying for the last two weeks. She is a BLRW/light Sussex cross. The coronation and light Sussex hens have stopped. I have light too increase the daylight but we have had very cold weather this fall.
Just as I have done the last three years, I started feeding alfalfa that...
I thought that this might be helpful information for some.
Temp. ranging from 14 to 40 the last two weeks. I had not put the heater in my waterer until two days ago. I use a nipple waterer( bucket). I have one in the coop and one outside. The outside one was frozen most days and sometimes it...
This was my second winter with chicken nipples and aquarium heaters to keep the water from being frozen.
Same heaters used for two winters now. Results great! They have been coated with crust from hard water, tossed around when cleaning the buckets, frozen into the water when they were...
I thought I would show you the temp control thermostat I am using for both my incubator and brooder.

For the incubator I put the tip into a container of water so that the temp. of the water mass is read. I use a small plastic container and just put a...

Six new hatchlings in the bator( more still hatching). I put the nipple waterer in before I put them in. No regular chick waterer.
They have discovered it and are all ready using it. We will no longer be using the regular waterer. Saves on floor space and clean up.
I am wondering how to gage how the level of ventilation during incubation effects the hatch rate.
I know that we have to balance humidity temp. and ventilation to get a great hatch. I can't afford a CO2 meter at this point but I am wondering if anyone uses
one as part of their hatching...
My chickens were not laying(not molting either) for a couple of weeks.
I started feeding alfalfa sweepings(mostly leaves not stalks) 5 days ago and my egg count is rising daily. I am not going to take a chances, they will be getting alfalfa for the rest of the winter.
Not light out yet but I gave the chickens all the alfalfa that I could sweep up off of the floor of the hay storage.
That and some extra corn will help.
I would like to get an idea of what your Sussex are weighing in at, live weight and age.
Mine are as listed
Year old Light rooster is 8 lbs.
1.5 year old coronation rooster 8lbs
22 week old light hens averaging 5.5-6 lbs
22 -24 week old split hens about 6.5 -7lbs
I am looking to build my...
