I've had the Fastos for over 3 years, a pair of identical BOs, sweet as pie. Well just this summer one of them started crowing in the morning! A genuine crow, though somewhat weak. But it's loud enough to get me out if bed, to quiet her down with some scratch.
Have you ever heard of this? I'm...
Hi there,
I gave a dozen eggs to my mom last week and she didn't notice a difference between them and store bought!! I have to say in the spring and summer they were much more orange and flavorful. (My son wouldn't eat them because they had too much flavor!) but at this time they were free...
It has been pretty cold and windy here, in the teens day and night. We put a heat lamp in the coop and am wondering if it is OK to have it on all the time?
Now that it is in the low 30s, shall I take it out?
I have done some reading here and think I have the answer, but a few opinions never hurt...
Our run is uncovered and is dirt (now that the rains have started, mud) and I spread some straw down over the extra muddy parts and it has turned to muck.
I give them kitchen scraps daily and just throw...
I was so excited to get those greenish bluish eggs! I've been waiting 23 weeks and my girls just started laying. My BR layed her first egg on Friday, a little buff colored one. She has since laid 2 more. Then Sun. morning, Kari lour EE with great cheek feathering, laid her first, but it was...
Our girls went missing in the evening. We couldn't find them anywhere. First it was one, then it was all but the pair of BOs. Then it was everybody. Days, heck, even weeks. We knew they were somewhere because they came back every morning, happy as little chickens. But where, where did they...
Our lovely, healthy Abigail is an Abner and the neighbors aren't going to be pleased. 15 wks, getting beautiful coloring, friendly, non-aggressive with ladies, kids and dogs. Please give our pet a good home. Will deliver to our close area or you can come get him.
I have a 12 wk. old who I purchased as a sexed BA day old pullet. After a few weeks it became apparent it wasn't a BA as feathers are black with white markings. I asked here and verdict came back SLW roo (red comb, thick legs, etc.) But I'm not convinced.
Abigail hasn't crowed yet, no pointy...
Our 12 week old girls are happy free ranging in our back yard (mostly because we haven't finished the run) with dirt, grass, pea gravel and a concrete pad. We don't supplement with grit and they seem fine. Are they going to keel over with impacted intestines? Is grit essential with free...
Our 6 chickens are 10 weeks and we are pretty sure that our SLW, Abigail, is a roo, as "her" comb and wattle turned red really early and legs are thick and short and body size is larger than others. But since "she" hasn't crowed yet, we are still holding out hope. Its our BR we are now...
Our girls are in their new coop, though the run isn't finished. They have free run of the yard (and are a pain in the rear to catch!)
Should we block off the nesting boxes until they are of laying age? What if we just leave them empty or just line them with shavings instead of straw? They are...
I haven't seen any photos of Black Austrolorps with so much white striping on feathers and such a wide flat comb. It is really red, and s/he already shows red waddles, I think. Any ideas? Is my dear Abigail a roo? She is significantly heavier than her EE and BR sisters, but that could be a...
Anybody have any ideas as to how we can keep the shavings out of food and water? They get so full that when we get home from work they can't get food or water. We only have 6 chicks, 4 are 3 1/2 weeks, 2 are 1 1/2 weeks but they are in a smallish brooder (18" x 32"). We a perch mounted...
How early do chicks start "practicing" crowing? Two of my two week chicks started something a bit strange, just today. They stop and open their beaks pretty wide but don't peep. It looks like a chick would look if she was coughing up hair balls. Or, like a rooster would look if he was...
OK, so I know I'm a first time chicken keeper and all, but what is going on with the feed stores being over run with chicken getters? I have called all 5 of my close feed stores on a daily basis (i'm not kidding) to see if they have chicks in (I just want two more, honestly). The feed stores...
Well, judging from most of you folk, it is
The 4 chicks we have are a little over a week old. We want to get just two more. Do we have to separate them? For how long? Our current chicks are so sweet, two will already walk into my hand when I put it into the brooder. Will the new ones...
Thought I would get three Washingtonians on top of the topic list. We have been addicted from day one, chickens and this forum! Love our little brood and can't wait for more.
Thanks for the great info. and fun chat here.
Hi everyone, I'm new here and I love the advice and stories! This site has made our transition into fowl keepers a lot easier, thanks.
We just bought 4 chicks (2 Amer, 1 BR, 1 BA) from the feed store on Thursday (its' Sunday) and all is good with them, but I am getting curious about my BA. I...
