I picked up one of my chickens yesterday and a bunch of liquid came flowing out of her mouth like a fountain. I pressed in her chest area about three times and still a bunch of liquid came out.
It is not smelly. I checked again this morning, she is staying in the coop. More liquid came out...
I've got chickens (20) and guineas in the same coop but the guineas (14) are brutes. I need to change something so my chickens will have a more peaceful home place.
They both free range almost every day, but coming to roost is when it gets difficult. The guineas don't want anyone near them...
I have two Guinea keets, They are about a week old. One is injured at its elbow(?). Also his eyelid was probably pecked at. They eye is okay but the lid has a piece hanging that may be interfering with opening it. I cleaned it; there is no visible infection now.
First, a simple question - how...
My roo has been segregated for a week now in his own mini coop. I would like to let him out today. A couple of concerns: How will he know when to go into the main coop at night? Is a week long enough for him to return to his little coop if he doesn't go in the main coop? If fighting ensues...
If I've quarantined my keets in the garage for 4 weeks, the true "quarantine" is over, right? Meaning, they exhibited no disease, so I can begin the "introduction" phase (if I have other birds)?
I still really have no clue what I'm looking at. I guess the safest question might be, "How long can an infertile egg be in an incubator before it explodes?" I culled 2 this morning - good calls apparently. 1 was a yolker, 1 a quitter (just barely anything but not a yolk). The rest, just...
This morning I put on 23 guinea eggs to incubate. I will probably get six speckled Sussex eggs today. Can I add them to this batch, or will that create a problem with lockdown?
Can I just count back, say 7 days, grab those eggs and add them to the incubator? The nest has eggs in it from 16 days ago. Obviously a lot are no good. I'm going to pull the old ones. Should I just start collecting and adding to a carton or can they go to the incubator all together straight...
We have a run that is 8x20 and completely covered in hardware cloth. Several days a week we contain our chicks during most of the day. We need to expand to give them more room. If the expanded area is an area that can be closed off at night from the other run and the coop, is it necessary to use...
We just moved 6 keets out into the covered chicken run, in their own little cage for right now. I know they need to stay in the coop/run for about 4 weeks, but at what point can I let them out of the cage to mingle with the other birds (4 guinea, 7 SS)? Seems I recall last time the birds learned...
If you can add any additional information to this, it would be much appreciated.
Easy one - egg yolk.
Wondering what this spot on the end of the egg means. Is it simply revealing the air sac?
Is this the chalaza?
Does anybody have any pictures of guinea nests you found? I understand I may have to go hunting them, but I really have no idea what to look for. Thanks.
I'm just curious. Do most folks cull male guineas? (Are they called roosters?) I'm thinking since guineas aren't typically kept for eggs, and more for a job (insect eating), that keeping them would be wiser than getting rid of them. What say you?
Do roosters molt? I have two roosters left (and 6 hens). I had sold one to a lady and it died with an upper respiratory ailment not too long after she purchased it (late November). I find that very odd since ALL of our chickens are fine and have never shown any sign of any troubles. BUT, we said...
Looks like my eggs may end up med., maybe med./large. I was thinking $3/dozen. What do you guys charge and does it matter if they end up medium? Thanks.
We have a feeder in the covered part of our run. We don't have any feeders out in the yards or inside the coop itself. Where do you guys feed your chickens. I often wonder if I should be putting food in the coop. Most of they time the door to the run remains open, unless it gets really cold...
I couldn't see where this might fit better so sorry if I'm posting in the wrong category.
I ordered 18 speckled Sussex pullets, delivered in June. Of the 18 ordered, 4 are roosters, one is a Rhode Island Red. Do I have any recourse with the vendor?
So we built a new run and added it on to the old coop. All we had left were 2 roosters from the old flock. They had been alone for quite some time so we didn't want to just throw them all together so we locked the girls into the run and would let the boys out the front side of the coop. We left...
