Okay chicken experts,
It's been over 4 months since I've gotten a single egg from my flock. I was getting 8 or so a day out of a flock of 13. There's a Rooster(SLW) in with the ladies and plenty of space so there's shouldn't be much pressure from him if any. They have two feeder which I...
Saturday my daughter and I relocated some unused dog pens in hope of using it for temporary housing while we are on vacation. We ended up putting two 10x10 kennels side by side. One houses my six layers and the other houses my eight new comers. The two are separated by a door but I plan on...
Yesterday I checked on the ladies and to my surpise there was a six foot long black and gold snake tucked in between the wall and the five gallon buckets I'm using for nexting boxes. I called a couple church members and one came over and helped me out. We safetly caught it and released it in...
two days ago I came home to this...
Two of my three white Leghorns($4 each about four months ago) are laying. And I just bought some new babies. I'm so excited.
This is my Franken-tractor.
You can tell why I named it that. I've got pieces from past projects tied up into it. It has taken me forever to finish it because our family is very busy and I'm making it up as I go. Here was my original idea for it.
I still have a ways to go. I have to add...
What's a good number of birds to put in a 10x 10 area. The hen house is raised so they have the entire space. I've got 3 in there now and three more set to go in once they mature. I don't want to crowd them but I also want to maximize space.
I have a question concerning galvanized nesting boxes.
Do the need to be inside of henhouse for the girls to use them? I was thinking of putting one on the wall of the enclosure(exposed) and possibly taking the nesting boxes out of the coupe/henhouse to make room for more bird.
What do you...
Here is my version of a chicken tractor.
So far it has cost me zero dollars. I am hoping to raise meat birds in two or three of these. Tell me what you think.
I have a few catalogues from a few hatcheries I just want to see where everyone is getting their Cornish crosses from. I want to do a couple of runs in 2015. I'm located in south Mississippi.
Thanks in advance
Ran across a guy selling wild turkey hatchlings. He said the looked and tasted like the turkeys that are hunted during season. What's your thoughts on this? I actually though about getting a couple and trying them out. He wants $10 a piece for them.
Take a look at these pics of the very first super jumbo egg. It makes the biggest "regular" egg look tiny. I weighed it and it was almost double the size.
I've narrowed down the producer to my big black sex link or the not so big RIR.
Today one of my dogs broke out of the "dog yard" and grabbed one of my RIR hens. I shooed the dog away. Put her up fortified the weak fence area then turned my attention to the hen. I thought she was dying or going to pass but once I picked her up she woke up and showed signs of life. However...
I was awarded three chickens the other day for helping my brother move since he would not be able to take care them any longer. One appears to be a barred rock or cuco marran the othe is golden in color the last one appers to be a rooster perhaps some kind of red mix. None the less I was happy...
My wife told me today that once my hens start laying good I can start a run of meat birds! I'm excited to get a batch of Cornish X. My girls are almost 6 months old so I think eggs could come anytime now especially since I got rid of the pushy Roos.
Now it's time to start prepping. I want to...
Is there a master list of feed mills on here that sell to the public? I'm in south Mississippi and is interested in buying feed for myself and my brother's flocks.
I do think it would be cool to have a master list though if it hasn't been done yet.
I have 7 chickens(5 RIRs[2 of which are Roos] and 2 Black Sex links). The hens are my layers. I'm in the process of culling the roos for the freezer. In doing this I am learning to process chickens by practicing on the roosters and have been wondering what would be a decent number of meat...
I finally worked up the courage to go thru with processing one of my RIR Roos this weekend. I asked for help from my brothers who seemed to be fascinated with me having chickens(one even when out and got him a couple) but neither came through so I went at it alone.
It was a task chasing the lil...
Is regular yard grass clippings okay for bedding in the coop/run area and nesting boxes? I dont my yard with anything and I haven't used granular weed and feed or pesticides in over a month with plenty of rain since. Just thought it would be a cheap way of recycling.
