    Easter Egger? Pullet or cockerel?

Five weeks old, from Meyer Hatchery. I lost a bunch of babies I ordered due to a heat lamp malfunction, which has left me struggling to identify the ones that are left. Because of the puffy cheeks and slate green legs, I'm thinking it's an Easter Egger Bantam. Hoping for a pullet but EE's are...

    Breed for this bantam??

This little guy (with that red comb I'm assuming cockerel!) is 4 weeks old. Definitely a bantam, and he has feathered feet. Some kind of Cochin maybe?

What kind of predator would do this?

I woke up this morning to a bloodbath in the chicken run. I already lost 11 of my 14 hens to fox attacks this spring while free ranging so I have been keeping the remaining 3 locked up in their run. Last night/this morning something pried back the hardware cloth under the run door, dug its way...

    Spot the roo!

I am supposed to have all pullets, but they are 19 weeks now and I have been getting fertile eggs (from my year old hens) for a couple of months. So...which one could it be? One of my Salmon Faverolles or one of my Ameraucanas? Who's getting a new name?

The fun game of hen or roo!

This is Marta, a 14 weeks old Partridge Penedesenca from Meyer hatchery. Supposed to be a pullet, but are those sickle feathers on the tail?! I hope not because I was really looking forward to some chocolate brown eggs!

Heating Pad Brooder - they love it!

My attempt to get my broody hen to adopt some guinea keets failed, so into the brooder with a heat lamp they went. Then I happened across the wonderful thread about using a heating pad to make an artificial broody hen and thought why not try it? I already had all the materials, so nothing to...

    Broody Hen Adopting Guineas

Just wanted to share as I am pretty tickled with myself and my broody hen. Last night I snuck a couple of guinea keets under her hoping she would accept them. After a nail biter of a night, I went down to the coop at first light find them happily tucked up under mama! I was nervous because...

Broody chicken + day old guineas?

Cross posted because I think my original post was in the wrong section! Another of my Buff Orpington hens has gone broody, and coincidentally I was planning on getting some guinea keets this week. I know chickens will hatch guinea eggs, but if I put already hatched keets under her, what are the...

Broody mama chicken - day old guinea keets

Another of my hens has gone broody, and coincidentally I was planning on getting some guinea keets this week. I know chickens will hatch guinea eggs, but if I put already hatched keets under her, what are the chances she will be convinced they are her own? Has anyone tried this?

Any scat experts? Help me identify this critter!

Something has been digging around my coop and run at night and last night it left some evidence behind. I googled some pics and it looks like fox scat to me. What do you all think? Thankfully we haven't had any losses yet but I'd like to know what we're dealing with and try to take every...

    Breed of this mystery chick?

I got this Meal Maker chick from Meyer Hatchery and they don't tell you which breed is it, just that it will be female and a layer. They're still tiny but any guesses? I'm thinking maybe Buff Orpington? She's the one in the front here:

    They're here! They're here!

Six new peeping chicks arrived this morning from Meyer Hatchery. They are so lively and cute! I can't wait for my sons to get home from school. Blue Ameraucana Salmon Faverolle Partridge Penedesenca Duncan, who thinks he's their mom.

    Molting First Year?

Hi all! I've read that chickens usually molt their second year. My Easter Eggers are 8 months old and I think two of them are molting. Is that possible? Or are they too young for that?

    Ordered for spring 2015!

Got a text alert from Meyer Hatchery that their 2015 chicks are up for order. Five minutes later, got mine in. Getting Salmon Faverolles, Blue Ameraucanas, and Patridge Penedesenca. Now gotta wait for spring!

    Good dog!

I know dogs are often the bad guys when it comes to chickens, but I have a happy dog story! I have two dogs and we are currently puppy sitting for my sister's Cavapoo, Huck. Yesterday I was feeding my kids lunch when all of a sudden Huck looked out the window and started barking like crazy. I...

    Covered run?

So our coop is done and we are in the final stages of completing the attached run. Half of it is going to be covered with corrugated metal roofing, but I am wondering about the top of the other half. DH plans to cover it with 2X4 welded wire, but is that really necessary?? It's on a hill, 7 feet...

    Cockerel vs. Pullet Behavior

This is probably a dumb question... But when do roosters start acting like roosters? When they are fully mature? Or can you tell by their behavior as chicks? I have a Buff Orp (8 weeks old) that I suspect of being a cockerel, but not from comb or feathering, just from the way he/she acts. I have...

    Pullet or Cockerel? 6 weekers

My chicks are 6 weeks old now. They are all supposed to be pullets but I am suspecting that two may be roos. I'm a first timer and I hope I'm wrong! I can keep one rooster but probably not two. I'd love your thoughts! Here's the first one, an Easter Egger my nieces named Elsa (may have to...

    Pullet or Cockerel? Easter Egger

I know it's early, but any guesses on this two week old? I ordered all pullets but he/she has always stood out from the group - more dominant, brave, spunky. And now is getting reddish patches on its wings, which I've read is a male trait for EEs. Any guesses??
