Thanks to these two wonderful women, I am able to post in the hatching forum again, instead of the pests and predators section.
After a terrible loss of all of my chickens, they have provided hatching eggs and chicks to help me get started again.
Thanks again,
Marcus
I have a neighbor that has a Lab/Pit mix.
About 6 months ago, this dog, and her other two slaughtered 10 of my chickens. I called animal control, reported it, and she wrote me a check for $500 in damages. She also promised to keep the dogs locked up.
Fast forward to a few days ago, the...
Day 21 was a complete nightmare.
The fan went out and the temp dropped like a rock, along with the humidity.
Three chicks hatched and a forth tried for almost a day, before I broke him out of his shell.
The first 3 pics are my new babies...the sweet part of the hatch.
The last three are of...
I have been struggling to get the humidity in my bator up past 50%, even with 3 water trays in there.
Well, yesterday I was in Walmart and noticed that they have cheap humidifier refills...a 3 pack was 6 bucks.
So I pulled one water tray, cut a refill in half, and put the halfs in the other...
I hit day 18 and removed the turner from my incubator and added two water trays, the humidity is now pushing 60, but the temp dropped to 96.8. It was like that overnight and we are tweeking it today to get it back up where it needs to be.
I think the hot motor from the turner was adding 3...
I am at day 7 and am wondering if I should candle now, or wait till Saturday (day 10). I have 29 eggs in there and it would probably take 15 to 20 minutes with the bator open.
If I have clears at this point, do I cull them? Would I be waiting until day 10 to cull anyway?
Excited, confused...
My incubator is extremely stable in both humidity and temp. There is a automatic egg turner and I can fill the water container without opening the lid.
It seems to me that I can have the best hatch by not touching anything until day 18, when I have to remove the eggs from the turner.
What do...
I put my eggs in the incubator last night at 9pm and it didn't seem to be getting up to temp, so I turned it up. Then I realized that I was supposed to let it sit for a day or so to get acclimated....so, I turned it down a little.
This morning the temp was 95.8 in the wiggler. I barely...
Here is my photo review of the eggs shipped by Schlecht Hatchery. They shipped on the 14th and arrived on the 16th. The packing and eggs are in excellent shape. The eggs are uniform in size and shape and have great color. They included 5 extra eggs, which was very thoughtful. The box came...
I understand that humidity needs to be raised from 40-50% to 60-70% on day 18. I also believe I read that all holes need to be opened to allow more oxygen.
How do you boost humidity in your bator when the dry air from the holes is working against you?
Looking for tips and tricks =]

Here are the images of the candling device I came up with.
The first picture is of the parts, which all came from Home Depot.
90 watt spotlight bulb
ceramic base with ease screws underneath for the wire
lamp cord with inline switch
a 5" to 4" adaptor (in heating and cooling)
a 4" cap (in...
I would like to get a rooster and a few hens of the variety that would make the Cornish X that are ready in 6-7 weeks.
Can I just save a few out of a Cornish X chick order and breed them?
Thanks,
Marcus
My incubator has been running for 24 hours now and here are the readings I get.
ambient temp - 101.3
Temp in wiggler - 101.1
Humidity - 68%
This has been holding for many hours now.
I have not drilled the air holes in the incubator yet. I plan to drill two 1/2" intake holes on the fan side...
I just ordered two dozen Barred Rock eggs from Schlecht Hatchery to be shipped on January 21st. The bator is finished and stable with 64% humidity.
Do I need to get that humidity down to around 50%?
Has anyone dealt with Schlecht hatchery before?
In my homebuilt incubator, I have an electronic temp sensor that turns the light blub on and off.
Should the sensor probe be inside, or outside the water wiggler?
The thermometer probe will be in the water wiggler of course, but I am concerned about the probe that controls the light bulb...
Here are the pictures of the incubator I am almost finished with.
My question is where do I put the fresh air holes, how big should they be and how many?
The clear dinner plate will be my window, sealed into a routed groove with silicon.
To keep the water wiggler, remote switch sensor and...
I have checked craigslist and ebay and I can't seem to find a source for Barred Rock eggs that is close enough to avoid shipping. I don't really trust that the eggs will arrive in good shape.
Any ideas on where to find an egg source? I live near Spokane, WA.
Thank you,
Marcus
