Hi,
I am looking to buy a waterer for my chickens. I would like one that is solar-powered, but am guessing that doesn't exist. Is their such a thing as a battery powered waterer? I don't need it to be an automatic waterer hooked up to a water supply, just something to keep it warm enough in...
My friend is a photographer and is doing a project. She would like to photograph children growing up on working farmss. She is interested in children who have more responsabtiliy that the average child.
Thanks ,

Just when I had given up hope that my girls would ever start to lay before winter, my beautiful RIR hen Einstein starts acting really weird. She has been very squawky for days now, and squats and spreads her wings when I pet her. I call my BFF (who has had chickens for years) and she agrees...
Hi,
The topic of Backyard Chickens will be discussed today on the radio show 'On Point' . I listen to the show almost everyday, so I was so excited to hear an ad for it this morning. The live show starts at 10 am EST. But the chicken section will be in the 11 am hour. It usually starts about 5...
This was the most terrifing thing I ever saw. I was in my pool this afternoon, and a few feet away from me I heard a REALLY loud chicken squawk. It was a sound I had never heard before. So when I hear this noise, I look over to my chickens (free-ranging in my fenced in back yard) and I see a...
When can you tell who is your head hen? I have three 12 week olds, and I also have four 11 week olds. They were brooded together from when the younger set were a week and a half old. Should there be a boss lady by now?
I swear I could tell who was going to be the head hen as soon as we mixed...
I have a few questions about egg color in Barnevelder vs. Welsumer.
Is one darker than the other? I am assuming that neither are as dark as a Marans, is that correct?
Also, is one a more prolific layer than the other? How about cold-hardiness/
(I live in Massachusetts.)
Any info would be...
Does anyone use pine mulch in their coop and/or run? We have an A-Frame coop. Coop is on top, with a run underneath.
Right now, I have pine shavings in my coop, and the run is on bare dirt. There are some people down the street who have the nice brown pine mulch (not the pine wood chips) in...
Hi!
I am new to chickens. Just got my first chicks 4 weeks ago. The man who owns the feed store said he hatched them himself I don't know if that means he bred them himself, or someone gave him fertile eggs.
Well, one of the 'Rhode Island Reds" he sold me has feet that are turning blue...
[]Hello,
We live in the suburbs, with a fenced-in yard. We have a 4' chain link fence, except for the back which has some old chicken wire. There is a stone wall right near the chicken wire fence, so I am guessing that my chickens (when they get bigger) will be able to jump/fly over it. Do most...
In the above photo, the one on the right is the one I think is a cockerel. The two on the left are the same age, but their wing feathers are totally different. They are also getting little tiny tail feathers already.
In the above photo, this is one that I think is a pullet. See how many...
Hi,
My husband recently brought home week old pullet chicks( Supposedly)
We really don't want roosters. But now my kids are naming them, even though I warned them that we are not keeping them if they turn out to be male. Has anyone ever castrated a young roo? (I mean had it done, not...
Can someone help me? My husband came home with 4 chicks from the feed store that the owner bred himself. Man says they are pullets, but wasn't very convincing, says my husband. I really don't want to wait 2 or 3 months to find out. My son is in love with the chicks already. (He wants to hold...
Why are my chicks asleep in a heap? I don't know how old they are, but they have some wing feathers. The brooder is 88/90 degrees. They are not huddled, but are all laying all over the floor, but kind of on top of each other. Is this normal? They are so cute. I just got them 6 hours ago.
Thanks,
Is anyone else having trouble buying day old chicks? All the feed places around me are seriously back ordered. Is it the economy, or is the hobby of backyard chickens really taking off (or both)? Any ideas?
(I am in Massachusetts, near the Rhode Island border)
