    Is my BO a rooster?

This chicken is 18 weeks old. The comb is much redder and larger than the others the same age. However, last weekend, this chicken seemed to be singing the egg song (was the only one in the coop so I know it was she/he). Any opinions are welcome. Thanks!

    Double Yolks

I was at the farmer's market this last weekend and bought some eggs from a local farmer (as my girls are a few weeks from giving me their own eggs). I was told that the large eggs (which I bought) were all double yolks and sure enough the couple that I have used are indeed that way. My...

    Chickens won't use ramp

Well our coop is finally finished However, no one seems to have told the girls that we gave them easy access to the raised coop via a ramp from ground level. So far they have been completely opposed to using it for either going up or down. I've ended up having to put them to bed at nighttime...

Screening for shade for new coop - suggestions

Our coop and run are almost finished and I am considering planting some sort of vine along the western side to climb up the hardware cloth to provide shade for the girls. Does anyone have any suggestions about what would be a good choice. I'm in California and our summers our hot, so anything...

    Finally making good progress

My hubby has been working every weekend on our coop in a race to finish before the girls outgrow the brooder. We bought the plans from My Pet Chicken and have been quite pleased with them and how the coop is looking. However, the maker of the plans was either 1) a master carpenter...

Upcoming Heat Wave - Where to keep 4 week old chicks

I just checked the upcoming weather report for the weekend and it is predicted to be between 101 and 105 in my area. This is a huge jump in temp and I am concerned about my chicks ability to acclimate to it so quickly. I've got them housed in a brooder which is in my garage. Even with the...

    Sick Chick?

I need help determining if I've got a problem with one of my chicks or if I am worrying for nothing. The girls are nearly 4 weeks old and all have been well until today. When I went out to check on them this morning one of them (the biggest and most feathered) was sitting directly under the...

    Lawn Time

It was an absolutely beautiful day in Northern California today, so I decided to let the girls have some time outside on the lawn since they've been kept in the garage since coming home from the feed store. We used one of the dog's old wire cages to keep them confined and let them look for bugs...

    Hi from Sacramento, CA

My Hubby and I are new to the world of chickens. We've got six Buff Orps chicks that are three weeks and and who are anxiously awaiting the finishing of their brand new coop (hopefully this weekend as they are growing much FASTER than anticipated). I've really enjoyed reading all the posts...
