8-week old pullets - Austin, TX

Hi BYC, I'm in Austin, TX. We're moving unexpectedly, and I am so very sad to say that I have to re-home my mixed flock. The flock has seven 8-week-old pullets, one suspected 8-week-old roo (not sure of breed), and two older birds that are still laying, but coming to an end. I hand-raised all...

First egg still attached -- should I be concerned?

Hi Guys, I'm a first-time chicken owner, and my dominique is laying her first egg right now. But she's not nesting. She's up and about. I went out to give them some veggies before I took out the compost, and it was stuck to her bottom. It's a little bloody/sticky, so I thought it might be...

    Is my chicken's crop okay?

Hi Everyone, I'm a first-time chicken owner. My chicks are about 5-6 weeks old now. And my black copper maran has what looks like a lopsided crop. The right side is much larger and firm to the touch. Very firm. Has been for a couple days. It's not sensitive though. And... I call her Athena...

Do treats work on taming baby chicks? What kind of treats?

Hey! I have five baby chicks that are just under a week old. These will be a backyard flock (in an urban setting) kept as pets and as layers. I'd love them to be as comfortable and friendly with me (and other people) as possible. They're pretty friendly already. Two of them actually run over...

    Do chickens like spent grain?

Hey! We're homebrewers new to chickens :) Random question: Do chickens like the spent grains from a wort? I'm thinking most of the sugar is probably out of the grains, but wasn't sure. Usually we just compost them. But I think I've heard of breweries giving the grains to ranchers? Cheers!

Cool episode of On Point (on NPR) about chickens!

Hey! I was driving to work last week, and On Point was about chickens. Honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of the show. (I usually switch off when Morning Edition ends.) But this episode is great! Check it out here: "Let's Talk Chicken." Here's the info about the guest: Andrew Lawler, author of...

    Quick question about list

Hi! I started making my first list, but ran into a snag. I wanted to make a list of the breeds I'm interested in. I was able to add the first one, but as I try to add additional ones, I get this error: {"status":"error","message":"Your account does not have the required permissions to access...

How big should the opening to the roost be?

Hi guys! I'm finalizing some coop plans, and was wondering if y'all have thoughts on how big the entrance to the roost should be? (It's for full-sized birds.) Right now I have it at 12"X14". Seem right? Cheers! Ashley

Greetings from Austin, TX! Got a sec to answer newbie questions?

Hi! My name is Ashley, and I'm a soon-to-be (this spring) chicken-owner in Austin, TX. Right now, I'm still in the coop-building phase. We're finalizing our designs in sketch-up and had a couple questions. Can I get y'alls opinions? We'll have 4 standard-sized chickens, all hens -- are three...
