Ok, so I understand that the girls need more light to continue laying. Is the purpose of lighting so they have longer times to eat? The reason I ask is, I have had a problem with mice so at night I try to make sure the food is up.

If I hatch any out...what will the dominate traits be?
I have what I believe is a filed mouse living amongst my girls. My hubby says its a rat, but he calls everything a rat
We have found a nest with babies in it, so their is a daddy out there somewhere. SHe does't seem to be bothering the chickens, but I still want her gone....any suggestions?

I also want to note, I have 19 chickens and 5 of them ended up being roos :-( THe roos were wearing out my poor hens so I had to seperate...

I am new to being a chicken mamma and I have questions about roosting and nest boxes. Will my girls not use the nest boxes for laying if they have been roosting in them? Please help me to be able to explain this to my DH so he doesn't think I am absolutly nuts!

I have 2 outside cats. Both very friendly and loving, but both are....cats!!
I would love to let my girls out but I am worried about the cats. Anyone have the same situation and if so, what do I do? Can the chickens take care of themselves when it comes to a cat? I wouldn't think so, but...
So, I fill my feeder up twice a day, but a lot of the feed ends up on the floor of the coop. My chickens are messy! Should I just fill it once a day and let them eat what they spilled? Just that feed is not the cheapest, and if it is not "mean" to let them eat off the floor, I will!!!
