This has probably been debated before, but I couldn't find a thread....

For those who raise, or have raised, both quail and chickens, which do you find to be easier? For purposes of this poll, let's assume we mean primarily for eggs. From what I have seen written, the consensus seems to be that quail are easier, but I bet to differ. I have raised both for a...

    This had to hurt

These are American pharaoh eggs and that is a quarter, not a dime. That big one has to be a double yoker. Ouch!

    Fly and smell control

I have more quail that I have ever had at one time and I can tell that flies and smell is going to be a challenge. I have read a few older posts about controlling both, but what do you do that works? Any new ideas? Preferably cheap and easy ones? I've had chickens and they were easy because...

    Lock down!

Forty-nine jumbo cots locked down and cookin'. Anybody with me? Sunday night they should be poppin' out. Time to start making more pens. UGCM

    Any idea what this is?

11 days old. Can't stay on its feet. No obvious sign of injury. Didn't notice any problems last night. Been on wire since day four with no problems. One of 46 in a pen with plenty of room and good temps. All others appear fine.

    Anybody done the math...?

I'm curious to know how many cots you would need to have to have a constant supply of meat and eggs for, say, a family of four. The calculations would have to include eventual replacement layers and breeders and other data. There would, of course, be some variables, such has how many eggs and...

    Texas A&M's popping like popcorn...

About 30 out of 65 hatched so far and the hatch has only been under way for about 14 hours, with the far majority only beginning about 7 hours ago. Day 17 just coming to and end right now, so things are looking good for a high percentage hatch. Most of the rest have pipped. These suckers are...

Power supply for 3 year old Hovabator Genesis 1588

Anybody know of a source for Hovabator parts that would have a power supply for a 3 year old Genesis 1588? I can't find mine anywhere and I haven't been able to turn one up with a Google search. Thanks in advance. undergroundchickenman

Dirty Jobs on catching chickens in Miami

If you get Discovery Channel, right now on Dirty Jobs they are catching chickens in Miami. Pretty interesting. UGCM

What do you do with your runts?

Most of my coturnix are about the same size, but I have two or three that are literally less than half the size of the others, maybe a third the size. Obviously, they won't be breeders, but will they eventually fill out enough to eat, or are they destined to be puny forever? If so, what do I...

    Coturnix feather development

My coturnix are two weeks old and have nearly bald bellies. They seem to be filling in gradually from the top and sides with what appear to be adult feathers. Is this normal feather development, or is something going on that shouldn't be? Their backs and wings seem fine. I keep them on pine...

How long can they stay in this space?

I have 70 coturnix chicks in a 2' x 4' brooder with a one gallon waterer and a feed of about the same diameter. I was hoping to be able to keep them in this brooder until I move them to pens of 4 birds each at 3 weeks of age (1 male - 3 females, assuming I can tell the difference by then)...

I think I like quail better than chickens. Anybody with me?

Don't get me wrong, I like my chooks too, but quail seem easier so far. Granted, "so far" isn't very far. One week to be almost exact, but I am forecasting an easier time with quail. Less space, less mess, easier to process, etc. Anybody with both feel the same? UGCM

What is the average loss percentage between hatching and maturity?

Just hatched 70 out of 100 coturnix a couple of days ago. Two have died of unknown causes and one appears to have wry neck. Just watching that one for a while. I know casualties are to be expected, but I wonder if any of you long-time quail raisers have arrived at a statistic for mortality...

How soon after hatching do you put your Coturnix on pine shavings?

Got mine on paper towels right now. I move my chicken chicks to pine shavings after a few days. What about coturnix? Thanks, UGCM

I've got PIPS and one early bird....UPDATE AND PICS......

Okay, have a laugh at this newbie, but I am on day 16 with 100 coturnix. I came home a little while ago to look for pips, of which I found several. I also found an exploded egg. Bummer, until I saw a chick hop out from under the fan in the center of the glass! Okay, have your laugh...

Somebody bring me back to reality....

I am a first time hatcher and set 100 coturnix 9 days ago. I have candled 10 on day 4 and found one dud, and candled 10 others on day 8 and only found one more dud. Assuming a fairly even distribution, statistically I am looking at a 90% fertility rate. What is the average drop off in actual...

First timer set 100 coturnix today....UPDATE

Decided to give it a go. Set 100 jumbo browns in a Genesis 1588 with the autoturner for quail. Some of the eggs were a tight fit and the racks bump them a bit when they turn. Anybody have that problem? Should I be concerned? I don't think it will break them. It's just a nudge. I will...

Anybody know what breed this is?

I purchased this pullet as part of a group of 8 black sex links from my local feed store. I didn't notice until I got home that one of the eight had a white spot on its head (barred rock, and possibly a roo) and this one. I can find anything like it on feathersite. You can't tell in the...

Any studies on "resting" shipped eggs?

I posted this in "quail" yesterday, but received no replies, so I thought I would try it here. I am going to be receiving 100 coturnix hatching eggs on a Wednesday. I would like to time a hatch on the weekend, but that means I will have to put them straight in the incubator upon receipt, and...
