I have an 11 week old pullet that has been identified as a splash old English game bantam. Everything says it but there's almost no comb. It looks exactly like my two sebright combs. Is that normal or is she mixed?
I'm thinking male and I have to start selling or rehoming a couple this week, possibly next. This is the same chick in each photo and my only silkie so I have nothing to compare.
I know it's hard to sex this breed but I just rehomed an obvious cockerel 2 weeks so ago. I've never had a silkie but I have to thin out my flock due to permit laws. This one is 8 1/2 weeks old. Any obvious signs?
About 20 minutes ago I noticed some poop on my patio while the girls were out foraging. The only one with blood in her vent area is the one that just started laying on Friday. Could this be coccidia or maybe due to her being new to laying? Her eggs are more elongated than the others but I don't...
Yesterday I rescued a chicken that's been apparently running loose in our neighborhood for close to two months. She looks healthy but I know looks are deceiving. she is currently quarantined but her pen is about 5 feet from my big girls coop/run. My backyard is very small and that's the...
This is a chicken that was found in our area and the lady who found it is asking if I can give it a home if they can catch it again. It's very small, It's tailfeathers were sticking straight up , has a tiny yellow comb and a rather small head. At first she looked like a Cornish but I'm not...
So here's updated photos for the guessing game. Bought at a store with "pullets only" but the barring is a concern. Several people have posted hens with the same coloring and told me pullet but the tail feathers don't seem right. They have this thing on the end that seems like a sickle. I have...
I purchased both BR from a store that said only pullets. One has always concerned me with slow feathering and lighter barring but it has the dark wash on the legs and the comb is the same size and coloring as the known pullet. It was easy to tell them apart until last week when I noticed the...
I want to add a few things I never came across during a year long research on raising chickens that could be helpful to all newbies out there. Now, I've only had my guys for 3 1/2 months but so far I've learned:
Poop smell--not as horrible as I've read if you keep things clean (but not spring...
I was positive these two were pullets. This morning the red one attempted a crow then the white one followed. They are 10.5 weeks old and I have already rehomed 2 EE roos from this group that crowed early and had the red comb but now I'm baffled. I watched a few videos of hens crowing on the...
I asked for 2 BLRW from a breeder who had beautiful ones and he grabbed 2 chicks from his brooder box along with 3 other breeds I'd asked for. I'm so confused on all but my Buff Orp but one of these may head to a swap meet at TSC if it keeps making these weird honking/crowing noises. They are...
My 2 week old chicks have been doing great but I noticed 3 poop piles this morning that had blood in them. They looked very similar to the "shed stomach lining" poop pictures except for one- a little more splayed out and darker red. I went ahead and ordered Corid because I freak out over small...
We will be getting our first chicks next weekend and they will be around 4-5 weeks old. We will make a brooder box and use 60w light for a heat source (our house stays 70-74dgs). Do they need grit/sand this early on or just the water and food? Also, I don't think they are handled much so I...
