Deep litter method w/ DE question

Does anyone know what DE adds to the garden? I'm using deep litter method and when I do empty the coop I've been putting the litter, which is loaded w/ DE, in the compost pile. I have a new garden plot with very poor soil and am considering putting the litter right into the garden. Is the DE an...

Chased a coyote away after a dream about a dead chicken!

This is gonna be a problem. Will a BB gun be enough to keep it away? Hens making their usual 'we want breakfast' ruckus. When I looked out to tell them I was coming, a gorgeous, ivory colored, very healthy 'yote was at their run, grinning at them with his tongue hanging out. He just looked at me...

15 eggs from 35 hens, down from 25!! What is going on?

They are getting the same feed and water, (organic and w/ apple cider vinegar, respectively) let out of the run 3 x's weekly at dusk for an hour of running. (Very funny) 15 polish crested and 20 golden comets, only a few are broody. Such good girls, but I'm down to 10dz eggs a week for the...

Bumblefoot? A knot on the bottom of her foot

She is not using her right foot, is hopping. When I looked, she has a big swollen 'knot'on the bottom, where her toes all meet up. I put blue-kote and when it dried put a triple antibiotic ointment. I'm sure these won't help, I didn't see any broken skin. Can I use sulmet for this? Or do I need...

4 wks old too young for hardboiled eggs?

I've seen other posts that have given hardboiled and scrambled. Mine haven't had anything other than yogurt mixed with starter. Also no feedback yet on listless chick. I may try olive oil and massage on her. Thans, Newbie Donna

Lost 5,4 wk old chicks, now my all black cutie is listless

I don't know what's wrong. They are on medicated chick starter, clean pine shavings, fresh water w/ acv, and 100 watt red lamps moved 4 ft away. They are not huddling. I put roosts in that they use. There are 9 chicks in the cage. It's dimensions are about 2 1/2 X 3 1/2 and 3 1/2 tall. The...

28 chicks, I feed them medicated feed w/ powered milk, garlic and cayenne pepper. Also acv in their water. They seem really healthy and fine, altho I lost one last week. :^ ( Suddenly, she became very lethargic, I fed her milk w/ an eyedropper to no avail. Is coriodosis (spelling?) something...

Hi, new member from Central MA

I'v had RIR's in the past, last week rcv'd 30 top hat (polish) chicks. I have one in distress. She's chirping to beat the band and won't move. Her butt looks okay, I gave her a beakful of yogurt and some water w/ mash sediment in it. I hope she's okay. I haven't figured out how to submit a post...
