    Best waterer for 17 hens

Hi there. My metal waterers keep getting holes. My plastic tub of water keeps getting nasty. What watering system do you recommend? I'm going to keep it inside the coop I think so that it won't get gross, but definitely up for suggestions. We have 17 hens so not sure how big it needs to be. Thanks!

    Meat bird question

Hi there. I believe instead of leghorns, I got meat birds. Very thick legs, grew super fast, anyway, can I keep them for laying? I'm reading mixed reviews. Also, can I put them with my other hens who are a year old. These are 6 weeks and look almost full grown! Thanks!!

    Gender?

Hi all. This guy/girl started making some interesting noises this morning. A little crow and a little owl! She is 4 months old, comes from a pack of 2 others who seem to stick together. They all get along so far with my 6 older hens. The tail, which is hard to see in one of the pics (she won't...

    Adding new hens....

Hi. I have 7 4-year-old hens in a coop currently. I have 3 newbies in a large brooder box in my garage. They are 2 months old and getting big. My husband is in the process of building a new coop. The old one is kind of beat up and really dirty! We built it in a place that doesn't get much sun so...

    HELP Big Belly!

For a few days now, one of my 4 year old hens had a HUGE belly. Feels like a water balloon, and when I look up online all I can find is water belly. And while that may be the case 1. I'm not sure how she would get it, she's not a fast grower, not too old, etc. 2. I have no skill in draining such...

    Feathers not growing back

Hi all, I know this has been talked about but I can't seem to find an answer that helps, Im sure I'm not digging deep enough. Anyway. I have a hen that is 2 years old, definately the runt of the pack, no roosters. She lost most of her feathers about a year ago. We call her skinny girl because we...

    Eating Nesting Hay/Straw

My animal supply store that I've used for years has closed so now we are buying our feed and supplies at a different store. I notice that my chicken are eating the bedding straw/hay that I put in their nesting boxes. They never did this before and I don't think it's a good idea for them to be...

    Cold Climate Coop construction

We have had our girls for two years now and realize the coop we built is not working well for us or the hens. In thinking of a new design, I am wondering what other people have used for the floor specifically with respect to ease of cleaning. We thought using a wire mesh on the floor would allow...

    Rooster Question

It seems as though my rooster is ganging up on my most beautiful hen. The back of her head is nearly pecked off! I'm taking care of the wound but how do i keep it from happening again. Last night i was so upset, i locked him in the run and out of the coop. He did not like that. Is that a...

    Rats?

I believe we have rats digging tunnels and chewing their way into our coop. I have a pest control person coming out but does anyone have any suggestions? I really just hate that they are digging up the ground under the coop. Its too late in the year for me to dig down and put chicken wire under...

    Gender help !

I am so new to this and I've read a ton. It seems as though females can have waddles, combs and crow. So how can I tell?? I have 8 week olds from a farm that should be all female, one crows and has a red comb and waddle. I acquired 11 others from my son's class, all hatched from eggs so I have...

    Gender help!!!

I am brand new to this. I feel like I've done so much research and still confused! If females have waddles and combs and can crow, how do I tell the difference? I have four that I purchased from a farm, 8 weeks old, supposed to be all female. Then we acquired 11 newborns from my son's class. I...
