I have a RIR hen that I'm not sure what's wrong with her. She's probably pretty close to 5 years or so old. I found her sister dead in the coop last summer from what appeared to be prolapse.
Anyway, this hen had gotten to where she was sort of waddling when she walked, sort of a wider stance...
I hatched out 12 in all. 11 are absolutely fine & thriving (gave 7 of them away), but the one I'm asking about was the last one that hatched. It is 2 weeks old today. I don't know what else to do for this baby. I've searched & searched the Internet & forum & haven't found anything quite like...
The enclosed yard that my chickens & dog are in is in horrible shape!
A little more than half of it has warm weather grass that is dormant, so it's brown & thin. The stolon things the grass grows on (I think it's Bermuda grass) are laying around everywhere...some of them kind of dangling...
I've seen mentioned on here about chickens liking sweet peas/English peas...little green peas.
I wasn't sure if they have to be cooked first or if you can feed them the frozen peas raw or right out of the can on the canned ones? I'm assuming the dry ones would need to be cooked first. What...
When y'all give oatmeal to the chickens, are you giving them oatmeal that didn't all get eaten or do you specifically make oatmeal for the chickens?
I don't give them any of mine if there's any left over because mine has too much butter & sugar...LOL
So, I specifically make some for them. I...
I know I read on here where someone used the heated dog bowl & filled it up with sand & set the chicken waterer on top of the sand. If anyone has done this, please reply.
Was your sand damp or dry? Did it work ok?
I just wasn't sure if it's ok to use the electric dog bowl dry or not.
Yesterday afternoon after I pulled out of the driveway, I saw a big bird fly from the woods across the street, flew right over my car toward my place. I was driving, so I couldn't look for shape of tail, shape of head & bill, etc.
I have looked on Peterson's & whatbird & can not find one...
I'm confused as to when to use thermocubes. If you use an aquarium heater, do you need a thermocube? What about a bird bath heater? What about a stock tank heater or pond de-icer?
I'm not sure I understand. Like I guess some things has a built-in thermostat & will kick on & off on it's own...
I know this may be a stupid question, bit gonna go ahead & ask...LOL
When there's a big bird flying up in the sky, how can you tell of it's a hawk, a buzzard, crow, etc.
Today while I was outside with my chickens, I heard the roosters make that noise like when they've seen something. I have...
Can anyone tell me what brand of eye drops for conjunctivitis you use for your chickens & where do you get them? The ones with chloramphenicol. I haven't been able to find them. I've seen some online available OTC but is in the UK. Are there any here in the US? I saw some for conjuctivitis...
Has anyone tried putting medications...wormers, antibiotics, etc. in the empty gelatin or vegetable capsules to give to a chicken?
I was wondering if they would even take it...like if you threw the capsule on the ground with some scratch or bread or something if they would just eat it. Or...
I ordered the screw-in type last night on eBay...got a pack of 10 of them for $6.45 free shipping.
Now I'm wondering if I need the push-in type. I'm gonna use 5-gallon buckets.
How do I get in touch with Neil here on BYC to order his? His PM is full. I sent him an e-mail through here, but not...
Are the Standlee Hay Company Alfalfa pellets from TSC the right thing? It's in a 50# bag.
How long do I soak them? How much of this do I feed?
What about the water they are soaked in? Any use for that? Add that to a mash to give it more nutritional content.
I'm afraid the 50# bag will go...
I've seen mentioned here about using over-the-counter conjunctivitis eye drops for chickens. There are SO many different kinds of eye drops, so I was wondering what brand (or generic equivalent) to get to have on hand. What are the active ingredients? What dosage? On what occasions do you use...
I was just wondering what kind of shoes you all wear when tending to the chickens.
I mostly wear flip flops lol, but for colder weather I got some gardening shoes on sale one day at TSC that are rubber looking. I thought they would be much easier to clean the chicken poop off the bottom by...
On November 5th, I discovered a pullet of mine started laying. I found 2 of her little small eggs that day...not sure if she layed both of them that day or one of them late in the evening before roosting the day before.
Then, the next day, November 6th she didn't lay.
November 7th through...
How in the world do you get nest boxes totally clean?! I know many of you have the fold out doors on external nest boxes & many of you use portable nest boxes like cat litter pans, rubbermaid containers, etc. Those seem to solve the problem of cleaning out nest boxes.
But, I have wooden...
Ever since I've had chickens (2+years), I've been wanting to compost but never really knew how.
This summer I finally got a composter from Sam's. It's on a stand & easily turned. Here's the one I got:

Well, hubby...
I've been raking leaves A LOT! I've already put PILES of leaves in their pen/run & they LOVE scratching in them!
This week I've been trying to work on raking the enclosed yard they stay in. Well, I wanted to keep these leaves separate from the other leaves I've collected because I'm sure...
