What carries off chickens, one at a time, and leaves no evidence?

I've lost probably a dozen young (20 weeks or less) dual purpose chickens over the last month. They free range during the day. Think they are disapearing at dusk, but that's just a guess. I've found no plucked feathers, no blood, no remains, I'm just short a chicken when I go out to lock them...

    Trouble with shrink bags

I tried the shrink bags for the first time this weekend. I guess I'm not making a large enough puncture in the bag because I'm left with air pockets. I'm piercing over the breast. Not over the breast bone as I now read that I'm supposed to , but just to the side of the breast bone. I used a...

Any ideas on what this bantam rooster is?

I got Tiny Tim, or Timmy, from a lady I was buying 8 red sex-link pullets. She threw the little guy in for free. Free chicken, cool!!! All I know is he came out of the bantam bin at Atwoods.

Baby Muscovy ducklings a bit confused

I have five broody muscovy hens in one stall of my barn. They all started setting at different times. The first nest hatched on April 15th. But apparently the ducklings didn't like their mother. They promptly left their nest and huddled around, under, on top of the neighboring hen. The...

    My turn to vent

We left the house Tuesday afternoon expecting to be back in just a few minutes. So, we didn't shut the gate across the driveway. Return 25 minutes later to find a dog in my front yard. When we get closer, which my wife did at an amazing rate, find a duck under the dog being chewed on like a...

    Help identify Fraidyduck

Adopted this duckling about five weeks ago from someone that made an impulse purchase at atwoods. They were keeping him inside in one of those 16 inch tall hamster/gerbil play cages. Duck and owners were not happy. Anyway, can anyone help to identify what breed/sex it is. I don't think its...

What do you feed just hatched ducklings?

Do they eat chick starter or what? Medicated or nondedicated. I know I've had 35 days to figure this out. But, it never crossed my mind. I've got chick starter and game bird starter on hand.

Thought this was a cuckoo maran....Anyone know what it really is?

This gorgeous hunk of male chicken flesh was hatched on Halloween from a barnyard mix of eggs. The lady I got the eggs from supposedly had Cuckoo Marans, Ameracuanas, Jersey giants, Cochins and I don't know what else. She runs a small hatchery, but in October had let all of her chickens out of...

What do you feed your breeders?

Once my birds get to about 8 weeks old, I switch them from purina game chow starter grower to layena. What I've noticed is that the 12+ oz 8 week old hens become 10+ oz 12 week old birds. What do others feed mature birds. I'm thinking about keeping them on the higher protein starter.

How long will Quail hens remain fertile after removal of roo

I've recently culled my birds to the largest 12 hens and 3 roos. I want to set the next round of eggs but want to make sure they are fertilized by the big boys rather than a freezer camper. How long before the old roos influence is out of the hens system?

What are good weights for jumbo coturnix hen and roo?

I weighed my 9 week old coturnix this weekend. Out of 40. I had 2 hens weigh 12.5 ounces and a couple roos weigh 9.6 ounces. The rest were smaller with a few 11 ounce hens and most of the roos weighing 8 ounces. My question is, what is considered a nice jumbo. Are mine undersized or average...

WTB broody hen for daughter's science project

My daughter wants to do a science project to compare and contrast eggs hatched using a natural incubator (broody) to a manmade incubator. Looking for a hen or three that might become broody over the next two months. I have 5 Ameracuana hens, but only one of them has even begun laying. Looking...

How long to feed medicated chick starter?

My chicks hatched 10/30 so they are 5 1/2 weeks old. Almost at the bottom of the bag of medicated crumbles. How long do they need the medicated feed. Then, what do I switch them to? They are a mixed lot of marans, EE, polish, and unknown others. The roosters will eventually become supper.

Need help, chick stuck to egg

Had a chick just hatch and he has not separated from the egg. Seems the umbilical cord is still attached to both chick and egg. Anyone have suggestions? I had to break lockdown to rescue the little guy as his other hatchmates were pecking at him a lot.
