Okay, I have a light Brahma cockerel , Mongo, that I've become attached to. He's roughly 8 months old. He was one that was attacked by a predator (at about 4 months old) that ripped quite a wound in his back...required daily bandage changes, aspirin in the water, and an indoor cage for two...
Anyone see any issue with using this chick starter as a supplemental feed for my ducks/geese? They are let out to pasture/free-range during the day and get a bit of fermented feed (all-flock/flock-raiser) in the evening to pen them up. Would be fermenting this instead.
Okay, these pics are from a month ago but she(?) hasn't really changed much. Three months old in the pics. I was thinking female, but gamefowl are definitely not my area--came in a mixed batch of rare chicks. She's roughly a foot tall at four months...is this consistent with the larger...
Is this pullet a Speckled Sussex? It is one of the breeds I have purchased, but my records got a bit muddled in the middle of the summer and she doesn't have the traditional red/black/white coloration so I'm not sure. She is red/light blue, has white legs, and a straight comb.
Anyone else feel their own nethers hurt when they gather one of these gigantic eggs from their girls? The one on the left is a normal large/XL for comparison.
Hmmm...nevermind. Can't seem to get a picture to post...
I think one of my sex-link pullets growled at me today, then pecked at my shoes really hard. It was a new type of vocalization anyway and the shoes are the same I've always worn. I counted back and they're 17 weeks old. Do pullets get grouchy when they're ramping up to laying their first egg...
My evening routine is to go down to the brooder room when it's time to "tuck the chickies in"--I make sure they have fresh water, top off their trough with fermented feed if necessary, and settle down on my bucket to watch them for a while. Not only do I enjoy it, but it also lets me get to...
So. I got two Nigerian yearling wethers the day before yesterday and they are a challenge for sure. They can hurl themselves over the four foot chain link fence that surrounds their temporary enclosure, which I was not counting on, so I spent a great deal of time chasing goats yesterday and...
Okay, got a shipment today that included some unidentified chicks, but the good news is that I have a list of the possibilities for you to pick from. These could be tufted pea-combed Olive Eggers of various colors, so we can assume that anything not fitting to any of the pure breeds could be an...
I went out to take care of my 10 week old pullets this morning after a brief thunderstorm. It was their first experience with one although they have experienced both rain and snow. Coincidentally (or not) today was the first time I noticed that most of the naked skin on their faces (combs...
I was watching chick TV this evening and had the stray thought about what would I do if the power went out since I don't have a geberator? There are quite a few chicks, so stuffing them in my shirt would be comical. I guess I could throw them in the car with the heat on high, but depending on...
Got six assorted bantams tonight. The clean legged one was easy to ID...s/he's a Silver Seabright. The rest all have feathered legs. I am assuming Cochins and Brahmas? Would love some assistance with breed.
Bantam #1: I was thinking black cochin?
Bantam #2
Bantam #3: yes, I cleaned...
Okay, so as I understand it, if otherwise healthy chicks are raised with some exposure to cold weather they will tend to feather out quicker. Does the cold exposure have any effect on the speed of developing combs/wattles? Or are they purely an age/hormone thing?
Right, so I had decided to use the deep bedding method in my raised coop (and deep litter in the run), but it appears I may have a sensitivity/allergy to pine shavings which seems to be the favored material. So, what is the second best option? Chopped straw? Wood stove pellets? Others?
Started construction on my first coop!
Yesterday, I measured and dug out all the post holes. I was *supposed* to have help doing it, but no call/no show. :/ Getting everything squared up would have been much much easier with two people since the ground isn't level. Not to mention the...
Okay, just broke ground on a 8x16' coop today since we have several days of warm weather expected here. I have ground-contact 4x4s that I was going to cut in 4' lengths. I'm digging the holes for them now: 2'4" deep, 12" diameter. Frost line is supposed to be 18-20" in this area. Will fill...
