    any ideas on this one?

all of my hens ran up to me last night looking perfectly healthy. A few moment later one was doing some sort of tail dropping, squatting motion. She then just set there. when I approached her she stood up but immediately did the tail drop thing again. Anyway, she was dead this morning. No...

    yet another hawk story

first some history I have had a number of hawks visit the backyard through the years. Some have made half hearted efforts at turning my chickens into a meal, but to my knowledge, no feathers had ever been ruffled. I had one Cooper's to hover over a very defensive EE, roughed up like a...

    rooster temperament

I am no rooster behavior expert. As a matter of fact, and to no end to this bit, I am not too knowledgeable in any field. As I type this, I am getting the whiff of chicken poo from somewhere about my body. I have just went interior pin to physically abuse a uteful (youthful) EE rooster. It is my...

what production breed is laying such a dark egg

I had to buy eggs at the grocery today. I know, I know, no good backyard chickener should admit such a thing. Anyway, the eggs were very very dark brown. Just what chicken are they using in a commercial situation that is laying eggs dark enough to be maran's? just wondering

    dead hen

I have had chickens in my backyard for 3-1/2 years now(4 summers). I have have had one to die each of the last 3 summers. 2 never really showed any signs of any problems, the other did get sick, but had appeared to get over it, only to die awhile later. The latest was laying well, looked fine...

    hova-bator questions

Anyone ever cover the top of their hova-bator to help insulate. I thought this might help maintain a better temperature? Are you not suppose to remove the vent during the setting, only during hatching? It amazes me this actually works, of course it is pretty amazing hatching under a hen too.

my hens had quit laying at molt last fall and took a good while to get going again (cold winter). when they weren't laying they acted quit shy, but now that they are going again they are very friendly and tame. and my little wyandotte/brown leghorn hen squats for me thinking i am the rooster and...

    red barred rooster

my wife and i were doing a little shopping in the heart of lexington ky today, when i heard a rooster crow; a nice deep hoarse crow. anyway i looked in to the backyard of a house that backed up to the store we were at, and there was a rooster that was very nicely barred in a very evenly orange...

    hen laying outside with pictures

I have 2 pullets that just started laying at 21 weeks of age. I was home each of the last 3 days, so they got to run free about the neighborhood. When i let them out today Breech (named so because she was upside down in the egg) took off in a run for a bush in our neighbors yard. I followed her...

    the taste of Layena

i fixed a snack of leftovers for my hens the other morning; roost pork, black beans, and a little white rice. it smelled pretty good upon heating it up. i could help but notice that they didn't seem to be eating the new laying pellets i was trying them on (layena). so i tasted it. i don't...

    fertility question

Okay, I don't know where to post this, but I will try here. at what stage of the egg development does the egg become fertile. I ask this because I wish to leave my roo with the hens long enough to get fertile eggs and then he is off to a new home. If a hen is laying every day then I am sure at...

    roo has to go

free to a good cook. my 4 month old roo is just nuts. he chased to older hens to day like a hound after a fox. He showed more fight than amore. The hens ran for their life, landing on anything off the ground. I guess their red combs got him going, he isn't nearly as aggressive toward his...

layed back roo for backyard flock

I started out with 5 hens and 2 roos (all EEs). The most aggressive roo, a beautiful red, I gave away. The other nearly killed a hen due to her refusals. I ate him. I have now raised another roo (mixed sex link), and at 4 months is working on getting eaten too. The pullets are afraid to come off...
