    Molting Stages Question

Can any of you chicken experts look at poor Gretchen's underside and tell me about how long until new feathers are in? Days? Weeks? Lows are near zero, highs just in the teens or lower here with neg windchill. She seemed lethargic and wasn't coming out of the coop today like other girls so I...

    Chicken Roosting Behavior Input?

I have six chickens who seem to live together pretty happily (no feather picking, squabbling, etc). The coop has 8 feet of roost space (2 four-foot roosts). The last couple of months, I've had one, rarely two chickens (always one or every once in awhile both of my two Wyandottes) that sleep...

St. Louis For Sale: Group of 3 colored egg layer pullets (2 Welsummer and 1 Easter Egger)

Anyone looking for a sweet little starter flock of colored egg layers? Looking to rehome two Welsummers and one Easter Egger. From Cackle Hatchery, all pullets, vaccinated for Marek's, hatched April 27th. Should be laying by late fall. Had to meet hatchery order breed minimum so knew we'd...

Gender of 8 Week Old Easter Egger?

This one keeps throwing me-- his/her comb doesn't seem that pink, but it's pinker than my other EE chicks the same age. But also the only one this color that I have. Thank you!

Anyone have nest boxes only in run?

I have a small raised coop with a run around it that is very sheltered (side of house with an overhang). In order to give them max coop space, is there any reason the nest box can't be attached externally under the coop, but not IN the coop? Anyone do this? Just 2-3 chickens and one nest box.

How long of an egglaying break do your molting chickens take?

How long of a break from laying eggs do your chickens take when molting? This will be the first molt for mine. Trying to figure out how many eggs I need to freeze to have enough for scrambled, quiches, and baking while girls are on hiatus. And, in your experience, do they all quit at once...

Can I feed chicks layer for 1-2 days?

Shouldn't hurt to feed layer to 5 week old chicks for a day, two days max, right? Feed store delivery delay.

    Disturbing Hen While Laying?

I've been having an issue with one of my 6 hens pecking eggs. She's not eating them and doesn't even break the membrane but obviously I want to nip it in the bud before she figures there's something tasty inside. Not certain which hen. My strategy for addressing has been to add a bunch of...

    Small Coop Ventilation

Building a 4x3 (3 foot tall) coop as a grow-out area, and possibly an iso/time out area if I have any future integration issues. It sits within a 8x12 with 6 foot fence privacy fenced area, so it should be pretty protected from wind for the most part. I've been staring at this thing for a week...

Switching to Crumbles from Fermented Feed?

Hens have been on FF for last 8-9 months using a whole grain feed (I usually alternate a bag of layer with a bag of grower). Working well. I'm about to be out of town for the most of the next two weeks so they won't be getting fermented, and they waste so much of the fines in the dry feed fed...

Suggestions for discouraging crowing (very temporarily)

Oh my, one of my 7.5 week old Cornish X (with 4 days to go til processing) started trying to crow this morning! We are very close to neighbors and very much in suburbia, and my meaties have been under the radar thus far so I'd rather not advertise my chicken habit in this manner. Anything I...

    Feed Question: Starter vs. Broiler

Cornish X newbie here. Have been feeding New Country Organics. Feed store gave my husband a bag of Starter at 21% instead of the Broiler at 19%. Is it ok to use or should I take it back? They are 5.5 weeks old now and we'd go through the bag in about a week. I'm seeing folks using much...

    Brooder Sanitation?

What do you do with your brooder in between chick batches? I had mine in a dog crate for about two weeks, with sides lined with cardboard. I'll bleach out the bottom tray and clean feeder and waterer well, but can I get away with using the same cardboard? Both batches were/will be day old...

Cardboard Boxes for Transport to Processor?

Anyone know of any issues with transporting birds 2.5 hours to processor in the back of a SUV in cardboard boxes? Would cut some holes in the boxes. Thought it would work well to find a recycle bin to dispose of them after I drop off birds and then I have cooler space. The other option is a...

    Siding over plywood?

This may be a really stupid question--obviously I am NOT a carpenter--but when folks are building small coops with exterior siding, is there plywood underneath the siding?

Side Dressing with Shavings and Chicken Manure?

I'm a lurker from the chicken forums hoping for some advice from the gardeners here! Can I mix in a shavings/chicken poop bedding mix with the dirt a couple feet away from shrubs? I have a bunch of Cornish chicks pooping away and I'm running out of composting room.

    Chicks and Temps

15 5 week old Cornish X chicks--do you think they'd be OK down to about 55 degrees at night? Some look pretty much fully feathered and some still have minimally feathered spots along their bottoms. It's been much colder and I've left the (gradually moved up) heat lamp on, but finally supposed...

    Anyone tried Cackle's Red Broilers?

    Thanks for any input!

Can 4 week old Cornish X have scratch?

I'm not trying to feed them more, I'm trying to get the piggies to move around in the great scary outdoors more. Is 4 weeks too young? I feed a mash so they're getting some bigger particles and they also have had grit out for weeks.

    Welp Weight Chart

Curious, in your practical experience, do your Cornish X follow the Welp weight chart generally? Mine are not Welp, but they're a little behind--they're 3 weeks and 4 days but weighing at the Welp 3 week mark (around 1.8 average). But, they're not Welp and I know that Welp is kinda the gold...
