We are new to raising chickens. We have 6 that we got in the spring from Rural King & knew nothing when we started.
My 12 year old now wants to show chickens at next year's fair. Another task I know nothing about, but I want to learn.
Where can I purchase fair-worthy chicks? What should I be...

First time chicken mom here. Our 6 girls are just at point-of-lay. I tried to incorporate the deep litter method in our coop, and I've decided that it's just not for me. Worked great- no foul odor or bugs- just isn't really my "thing".
My problems with deep litter:
-feathers are everywhere...
I've gotten mixed reviews about these 2 pullets. I bought them (and 4 others, different breeds) at Rural King, but most of the crew were mislabeled.
They are about 18 weeks. Single comb. Much bigger than the rest of the gals that are the same age (all standard sizes in my flock).
Our city commissioners will be voting on the chicken ordinance tomorrow evening. I will have 60 seconds to speak on why I'm in favor. Not sure what to say, other than them not being a nuisance. The general census of the commissioners is that people will start wanting to own other "farm" animals...

First time chicken mom here. My girls seem to be losing quite a few feathers. They are about 12-13 weeks old. Not very visible on their bodies, other than I notice a few gaps on their wings & tails where feathers once were. The coop, run, and yard look like someone had a pillow fight. They...
I need help identifying what's wrong here. My pullets are about 9-10 weeks old and their combs seem off colored. They are kinda chalky looking. Then today I noticed the tiniest amount of blood next to this one's eye. It's so minor, she may have done it herself. Also possible that one of the...
My husband came home with these chemicals to treat the yard for fleas & ticks. I haven't seen any on our chicks (7 weeks old), but we haven't been able to get them off of our mainly inside dog. We have tried EVERYTHING on him- even the pills you get from the vet. The label says we can spray...
We are installing the roof to the coop this weekend. It will be our last step of construction and then I'll get to start making it pretty with paint, inside layout & decor!
We were given bubble wrap insulation for our roof and it looks like will will have quite a bit leftover. Can I use this on...
We are getting ready to add the lean-to roof and we don't know what type to put on it. Our budget was blown weeks ago, so something cost effective is key. We are in Kentucky, where summers reach over 100 (plus high humidity) and we get our fair share of snow in the winter-- it's a 4x8 coop, but...
At what age does a new flock start establishing a pecking order?
I've noticed some friendly chasing, but they are only 5 weeks, so I wasn't sure if that's what's going on or if they are just playing with each other?
Our very first chicken injury... Should I be concerned about this wound? It was a very thin cut (about as big as a paper cut). Happened late yesterday afternoon. It is healing, but is starting to have a bump.
We have 6 "girls" that are quickly outgrowing their makeshift brooder. Approx 5 weeks old. Their run has been built- an 8x12- but the wire has not been buried around the perimeter yet. We let them out for "recess" for 2 or 3 hours twice a day (morning and late afternoon). The coop is under...
Let me start by saying by this... My husband and I are NO carpenters. He is a farmer, so he has an adequate supply of tools & resources. We just finished building our run last week (2 weeks of solid rain during planting season gets any farmer antsy). It's an 8x12 & fully enclosed. That was a...
My husband and I are planning to start building our coop this week. The run is already complete (8x12). We have six chicks, 4 weeks old. We plan on doing a 4x8 coop, lifted off the ground. It will be outside of their Existing run, so we only plan on it being about a foot off the ground. We live...
In the front is Cocoa, our smallest of 6. We bought them all from Rural King 4 weeks ago. Left middle is Dotsie. Right middle is Honey (I believe she was an Orpington) and in the back is CeCe, our fat girl. CeCe, Cocoa, and Dotsie all had chipmunk coloring in the beginning, but they all came...
