Had a bad situation about a month ago with one of our Easter Eggers was getting bullied by our five other hens (1 other EE, 2 BRs, and 2 RIRs). All of the feathers on her butt were pecked off, she was bleeding from the skin on her butt, she wouldn't go out of the coop to eat or drink much and...
Thought I'd share a little trick we figured out about 10 days ago. The black fence fence around the outdoor portion of the run (6' x 10', we call it the chicken porch), is from Lowes, 36" high. Very inexpensive, but obviously not high enough to keep the girls in. I was keeping a black golf net...
I may get flamed for this, but here goes:
I live on a 1/3 acre suburban lot, and my six hens are noisy. The noise last from about 8 am until about noon. The noise doesn't really bother me, but it bothers my wife because she thinks it bothers the neighbors. Speaking with the neighbors won't...
Update: the story is in today's paper and we made the front page!!!!! Check it out HERE!!!.
Our girls are famous -- we're so proud.
A reporter called and wanted to write a story about our chickens and the website and live coop cam. Can't wait for the story to appear. Fortunately, I wasn't...
Anyone ever try to take pictures of their chicks at night? My chicks were all snuggled up in their roost in the window of the coop the other night, so I tried to take a few pictures.
When the flash went off, two of them fell backwards off the coop as if they;d been shot. Scary and, since they...
So my chickens are six weeks old. They've been in the coop with a heat lamp at night and going out during the day.
Last night was their first night in the coop without the heat lamp. Temps were in the mid-70s during the day, but it was windy and it dropped down into the low 40s over night...

Has anyone seen this before? Seems like a good idea, bu I would substitute chickens for a cow. They're cheaper, and eggs are better for you than milk.
Interesting debate whether the chickens are livestock (in which case their coop violates county code) or "household pets" (in which case the coop is legal).
Of course, they're both. And, as I read the county law, that makes the chickens and their coop legal. Link*

My chicks are between 5 and six weeks old now, old enough I think for someone to confirm that they're all pullets (hopefully). Can you tell from the live feed on my blog: http://marbleheadhens.blogspot.com?
They spend a lot of time on the roosts, and, when they're up there, you can see their...
With the heat lamp, it's 60 degrees in the coop, maybe a little warmer than where I put the thermometer. Is that too cold for 4-5 week olds?
They are acting ok, not huddled up or anything. Plus, they spend tons of time up on the roost and it's warmer up there if they needed. They're smart...
My daughter turned 3 in August. Unlike our two boys, she's a bit of a devil child, always testing and pushing us. She does NOT like to be told what to do. How do we get her to stop sucking her thumb? It's a bit of a family problem as both my sister and my dad sucked their thumbs into their...
We weren't the main focus of the article, but the week it ran happened to be the week that we applied for and received our poultry license, so my wife was mentioned in the article in our local paper.
I posted a link to the article on my blog...
My chicks are one month old today. It's easy to forget how teeny they were just a short time ago. Love the video of my BO falling asleep on her feet and then falling over.
