6 ISA Brown Hens in Greenville, SC

Hi folks! Mark in Greenville, SC here. I really don’t want to, but I’m afraid I’m going to have to re-home my 6 ISA Brown girls. The chicks were purchased from TSC on March 30, 2016. It’s been a fun little project, but the investment and continuing upkeep heavily outweighs the benefits. I...

Greenville, SC ISA Browns, coop et al for sale

Hi folks! Mark in Greenville, SC here. I really don’t want to, but I’m afraid I’m going to have to sell my 6 ISA Brown girls and the coop I built. I originally started this project because my father passed away before he could get them for my mother. I wanted her to be able to think of him...

    What’s up with this egg?

Cracked this egg open for breakfast and saw this. What’s up with it? I’m used to a blood spot or two, but this is a first.

    Moved egg laying spot...

ok yolks...got a question for you. We've had heavy rains here lately and the laying boxes got a little damp. I took a moment to put down some dry bedding on top (it was 9ish at night so I didn't replace it). It was then I noticed there weren't any eggs in their favorite box (1 out of 2)...

    Limping/injured leg?

One of my birds doesn't seem to want to walk. When she does, she throws her left wing out like she is trying to steady herself. I don't see any evidence of bumblefoot and don't feel any broken bones. Range of motion feels good in both legs without any protest from her. What do I do?

    New coop woes

Hey folks! I just finished (functional) a new coop about a week ago and understandably my girls are wary of their new "Maison du Poulet". Over the past couple days they've gotten a bit more comfortable with it, but they're not going in all the way. Sometimes they chill out on the ramp. One...

    Decreased egg laying

Hi folks! My six ISA Browns were laying six eggs a day for weeks. So much so that we had to give eggs away. Now I'm lucky to get two to four eggs a day (two today). I don't see any evidence of predators, broken shells anywhere, or anything out of the ordinary. They aren't molting and they...

    Need some brooding education please.

I have six ISA Browns who were laying six eggs a day for a while. Now we get about four or five per day. Most days there will be one of the girls sitting on the eggs or just sitting in the nesting box while the others are in the run. I'll pet her and she will chirp, then get up and leave...

    Insulation in the South?

I'm going to be building a coop soon for my flock. I live in SC and was wondering if I need to insulate the coop. I have ISA Browns.

    Drooping wings

My chickens droop their wings occasionally as shown in the pic. Is it because it's hot here?

    Queen of the hill?

Alright yolks! I'm not worried or anything, but I wanted to show you what two of my ladies did when I was just out at their run. Besides it being cute...why are they flying/jumping onto my back?

    My ladies...

These are a few of my ISA Browns. I forget how old they are...early teenagers (if you think in human terms). They are the first animal that I have raised from just after birth. They are really therapeutic for me. I deal with depression and anxiety and today was one of my bad days. Sitting out...

    Odd eggs

Afternoon folks! My family have six ISA Browns who by all rights are still young and shouldn't be laying yet...but some are. We've had about 11 good eggs (on the small side). We've also had one soft shell egg (in the run, not the nesting box) and at least two eggs without shells (also in the...

    Need a chicken whisperer...

Alright folks...I just went out to feed my chickens some goodies and one of my chickens did something a little odd (and somewhat funny). She kinda squatted down, extended her feathers a bit, and ducked her head down a little. She has done this twice now to me over two days. Also I just picked up...

    Losing feathers

My 6 ISA Browns are losing feathers...not sure why. It's been in the upper 90's and humid. Should I be worried?

    Greenville, SC

Hello all! My mom has always wanted to raise her own chicken for the eggs. She is 69 and can't really do much for them, so I'm the backyard chicken farmer in her stead. We have 6 ISA Browns who are several months away from laying age. I didn't think I'd like it, but I'm loving seeing these...
