I have an old silkie rooster and this morning I noticed he was acting strange and lethargic. He was moving his neck up and down and opening and closing his beak. Upon closer inspection, I could see that there was a strange foam in his mouth and his feathers around his head were soaking wet...
I have always wanted to free range my birds but I can't because of predators:hit. I have recently been considering building a chicken tractor and was wondering if anyone had any designs/ideas/tips or tricks on making them. Also, would guinea fowl do well in a chicken tractor?
I want to get some peafowl next year and had some questions:
1) What would be a good peafowl to start out with?
2) What size group should they be in for breeding?
3) What dimensions should there pen be and what kind of housing/roost space do they need?
I have raised chickens for years but recently wanted to learn about the genetics of chickens. I have no clue what colors or egg colors are dominant/receive. I've always been interested in this and just want to learn as much as I can.
I'm always interested in getting new animals. I was recently researching quail and was wondering of it would be worth it to get about 10 or so for eggs and maybe hatch a few. Any recommendations for housing? Is this a good idea? Should I get more or less than 10? What breed should I get? Thanks.
Does anyone have experience making a large run for a chicken coop? Something like 50'x50'. I want it to be completely fenced in with chicken wire, including the top. Has anyone built something of this size? I would love any advice you may have.
This is one of my roosters, Lucky. I have had him for 4 1/2 years, but I am not sure of his exact age. I guess I sort of rescued him because somebody dumped him at my house during winter and he would of gotten frostbite on his feet if I didn't bring him inside ( he was perching on my chain-link...
I am going to be getting a few turkeys next year and adding them to my 7 chickens and 3 guinea fowl. I've heard that it is very easy for turkeys to get blackhead when they are with chickens. I haven't been able to find any reports of blackhead in my county, but, if the turkeys do happen to get...
I've been interested in showing chickens but had a few questions:
1. How do you decide which one to show?
2. How do prepare them for show?
3. Is there a certain breed that would be easier to start out with?
I was thinking about starting with old english game fowl.
I know it is extremely common for people to free range their chickens, but how do you protect them from predators? I can't let my chickens free range because they would all be killed in less than a day do to all of our predators. How do you not loose all your chickens?
I am very interested in peafowl and was wondering if there was any way to make a profit off them. I know this is a highly unrealistic idea, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I was thinking I could sell adult birds, chicks, hatching eggs, and/or feathers.
I currently have 2 roosters and a large divided coop with one on either side. I am going to replace rotted ply would and put a new roof on one of their hen houses. To do this, I need to move all the chickens to the other side (temporarily) and need to make new pen for one of my roosters. Any ideas?

4. How much roost space do they need?
