here’s our Serama, “Budget”, at 3 weeks! We put her/him, two pekins and another serama (that sadly didn’t make it), under our broody-in-November hen. After a week, the broody hen rejected her because she had a bit of a pasty butt and seemed to be struggling. We ended up moving the hen out as she...
this post is a bit cross-purpose.
One of our hens has been broody for about 4 weeks now and we don’t have a mature rooster. She’s lost a lot of weight and half her feathers - she’s a frizzle, about 18 months.
We bought her and her nest inside and have been fattening her up. We’ve put her on...
well this girl is turning out interesting so I thought I’d share... she has black spots on her back too.
Rooster: partridge Cochin x lavender pekin
Hen: chamois polish
Result at 7 weeks:
we tried to hatch some serama with no luck but our two control eggs did make it. They’re interesting. Father was lavender carrying partridge Cochin bantam. One mother was chamois polish, the other was a frizzle god knows what. I think there might be a touch of lavender in the polish and the...
quite a large bantam, completely pure white, naked yellow legs and a pink rose comb. She’s about 5/6 months old and believed to have just started laying. Quite sweet and honks instead of clucks. I thought it was a Wyandotte rooster for a long time but after finding some larger eggs in our boxes...
Hey - so this is floof, heavy at 6 or so weeks.
What do you think? Doesn't show much cocky behaviour but does have a bit of a crest.
I'm by no means an expert in the breed so hope for other's opinions. Would hate to have to lose this one.
So we generally hatch more roosters than hens but this season we have so far hatched 7 confirmed and 2 suspected roosters out of 9 hatched chicks. That seems spectacularly unlikely.
Does anyone have any similar experiences? Is it luck of the draw or, for example, are roosters more hardy in the...
Heres our one-year old “little black”. Sort of going into it a bit on the old aggressions but still harmless. I was wondering what he is?
He’s a cross for sure. We hatched from my mums eggs but those chickens are gone. His mum was lavender.
ok so I posted earlier about this one who spends a lot of time sitting/sleeping and is a little unsteady on her feet. Is this a foot problem? It seems her spurs/back toes are more forward and not offering stability:
Could that be the problem? Is there anything that can be done if so?
Apart...
hi everyone! We’ve hatched 4 shipped eggs and two of our own. The four shipped eggs were a mixed selection of pure breed bantams and could use some help figuring out who is what.
1. Large and boisterous
Think it could be light Sussex?
2. Small and cheeky
Barred Plymouth Rock?
3. Had help...
oh dear. Some individuals have been having a bit too much fun in the rain. Should we clean them and dry them or you think they’ll be ok? It’s cold here atm dropping to freezing at night though they do have a small tube heater in the coop.
ok so here’s a question. We have a flock consisting of a frizzle bantam, 2 polish bantams, a little bantam rooster (true gentleman) and three vorwerk - two hens and a rooster. They’re the youngest but considerably larger (though vorwerk are considered bantam weight) The rooster is probably twice...
Just thought some of you might like to watch our newly laying polish hens being silly.
They were our first shot at incubating and the only shipped eggs I’ve ever managed to hatch though they both needed help getting out.
good news! We got our first 2 eggs from one or both of our much maligned polish idiots in chief!
Bad news! The rest of the flock are a way off doing the same.
What should we feed them? Surely the layers will want layers pellets or some kinda calcium boost but the rooster and the growers could...
Hey everyone. We have a beautiful frizzle rooster who’s sit-on-lap tame and loves people. He’s mixed bantam from lavender and some other stuff and looks sort of like an old tartan rag doll. Unfortunately we have a frizzle hen and are light on hens so we have to give him up or make him die which...
so the growers were having a slumber party in the nest boxes. I blocked them off but there was still a ledge that the polish were getting quite comfortable on but one morning one had managed to fall into the nest box and get stuck. So I blocked it completely and now they just sleep on the ramp...
Hello everyone, just thought I’d make a quick intro but first I’d like to say thanks for posting all of your tips and advice up here. It’s helped us out of a bind on more than a 1000 occasions.
