    Help with identification

Hello, I obtained 20 chicks that are (supposed to be) pullet chicks from Meyer hatchery. The order included a few specific breeds that I know which ones they are (not pictured), and the rest were a mix of rare Marans and mixed colorful egg basket chicks. For grins, anyone want to weigh in on...

Finally got my quail records all in to my new record/pedigree program (plus photos of some chicks!)

Phew! I picked up Kintraks Animal Breeder software this week as it looked like it would generate nice, easy pedigrees if I want them and actually is pretty powerful at reporting progeny, coefficients of inbreeding, keeping track of breedings, etc. It was a little clunky at first to start using...

A hello and a thank you

I just wanted to say hello to everyone and thank you guys for your answers and discussion. I've been reading the quail forum and researching for my new quail and though I don't have any more questions at this time, I still wanted to say thank you for the indirect advice! I've got some A&Ms...

Some photos of my Iowa Blue flock.

Here are some photos of my Iowa Blue flock that I took yesterday. They are mostly silver penciled with a couple of the birchen variety, along with an olive egger and a couple of lavender Ameraucana bantams for egg variety. I love these birds, great foragers and so fun to watch!

Southern Farm Hatchery - anyone heard from them?

Almost a month ago I placed an order for some foam shippers from http://southernfarmhatchery.com/, but I've never received any kind of communication back from them other than the notice from Paypal that my payment was sent. I went to the site tonight and the pages are down. Anyone have any...

Salmonella Pullorum Antigen - 100 or 200 doses in blue cobalt dropper bottles

UPDATED 01/17/2016 - I do not have any more antigen and do not plan on selling in the near future. I have ordered myself some Pullorum Antigen for Salmonella (S. pullorum and S. gallinarim/fowl typhoid) testing to meet NPIP requirements for my state. I will have extra to offer to other...

Photos of birds I hatched from the eggs I ordered this year.

Thought I'd share some photos of the birds I kept from the eggs I ordered from Little Ameraucana Mom. I got some lavender bantam Ameraucanas and some mixed silkies (B/B/S and cuckoo). I kept 4 of the Ameraucanas and 4 of the silkies and here are some pics! Love these little birds. Lavender...

Iowa Blues - Breed thread and discussion

This thread is dedicated to discussion of Iowa Blues and for breeders interested in preserving the breed. The following proposed standard is a work in progress, but is compiled from various websites on Iowa Blues as well as from Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds. The Iowa Blue was...

Got new pics, opinions on the genetics of these Marans, please. :)

I posted previously about the roosters, but now have photos of all 8 of my Marans. They all started out gray/yellow as chicks and were to have come from blue/cuckoo lines. Previously I was told that the roosters show gold leakage, so read up some on Silver/Gold. I'm assuming (I know, not...

Valentine's Day Set for March 7th hatchalong

Biding my time waiting for Mahonri's easter hatch in April, so figured I'd save up the darkest of my cuckoo/blue marans eggs to set next week. Been getting some very pretty dark evenly colored eggs, so would like to hatch some replacement stock out of those to work the flock towards darker and...

    ID on Marans rooster color/pattern

Hello, I have some Marans that I got as day olds from a neighbor who has blue/cuckoo genes in the flock. I don't know which hen and which rooster produced my peeps, so don't know the exact genetics of the parent(s). All chicks appeared to be blue, not black. All 6 pullets were blue, no...

How quickly do eggs cool off when it's freezing out?

Granted, a lot depends on temp outside, snugness of coop, presence of heating, but just wondering for the sake of curiosity how quickly I would have to collect fertile eggs after being laid to have a chance at hatching some? I'd like to try my hand at hatching. It's about 20 something out...

First egg today, Happy Thanksgiving! Also some questions egg laying.

I set up my flock this year and have been delighted with them thus far. I've got 2 Marans cockerels and 6 Marans pullets, 3 Ameraucana pullets, and 1 Rhode Island Red hen that is a year old. Just got my first egg today, yay me! It came (I'm assuming) from the little Rhode Island Red hen I...

Wanted to share photos of my little slice of chickendom. :)

I've finally got my collection of gals that I wanted, some cuckoo, splash, and blue Marans (2 roosters, 6 hens), a Rhode Island Red for my hubby (he had them as a kid), and 3 Ameraucanas, a blue, black, and splash. Picked up the splash and black today. So excited to have eggs this fall, but...

Our first attempt at coop building

After much browsing of this wonderful forum, I put together a design for a small chicken coop for my Marans that I got earlier this year. The 2 boys began to crow this week and so far have gotten along very well (though I hold no illusions that it is likely to stay that way). I can't decide...
