I know you can check to see their freshness with the water test. My concern/ questions is.. Will the bloom come off of them using that method? Is there another way to check the freshness without the water test? I don't want the bloom to come off of them from putting them in water.
I need to clip my leghorns wings. They are now flying out of their run and going to visit our neighbors house 🤦♀️. Before any time they got out they stayed in the yard. I know how to clip their wings but was curious as to how high leghorns can jump with one clipped wing? Or should I do both...
We recently got a lot of rain( last weekend) and my coop took on some water. My coop is in the back of my shed and when we had a lot of rain it filled the back of my shed right next to my coop. It also got into my coop and the sand in it is all wet and damp now. The coop now smells and the sand...
My husband and I turned part of our shed/garage into a new coop for our chickens. We added two nesting boxes, a 46 inch in length roost which is 3 inches wide for them and sand for the floor( all-purpose from homedepot). There's still a little more to do I think, like add a window/more light...
I have one chicken who has a very messy bum. And when I was letting them free range she had dark green diarrhea. I did give them some blueberries earlier so I don’t know if that would be the cause. She’s eating, drinking and laying eggs. But I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I’ll try to...
I recently noticed a lot of feathers in my coop. It looked like an animal got in there with the amount of feather on the ground. When I was able to fully inspect my girls I have one with a lot of her feathers pecked out. I'm not sure if she's doing it to herself or the others doing it to her...
I went to check in my hens last night before bed and noticed one of them had a good size cut on their comb. I tried my best to clean it with a cotton pad with hydrogen peroxide and then put a little triple antibiotic ointment on it as well. I’m just wondering if there’s anything else I should be...
I am putting new dirt, sand and wood ash in my dust bath and I had a question about maintenance. How often do you clean it and how? And does anyone have tips on how to keep it dry, or what to do when it gets wet?
Hopefully I typed the title somewhat understandable. I had a question about removing the plastic from the outside of the coop/ run area for my girls. When will it be a good time to take it down? I live in New Hampshire and even in April there’s a chance of unpredicted snow/strong winds.Yesterday...
I live in NH, and of course the weather doesn’t know what it’s supposed to do. Last Sunday we had a snow storm. And today it was rainy and close to the 50’s. My chickens got wet and tonight it’s supposed to get down to about 25 degrees real feel about 18. My question is should I be concerned...
I have a question for all you chicken savy people. I know chickens are supposed to stop laying or slow down in the winter, but my girls seem to be doing the opposite. It’s getting dark around 4:00pm here in NH and I don’t supplement light. Some days I get an egg a chicken and other days I get...
This is my first winter with my chickens. I got them back in April and now it's starting to become cooler. I live in New England in NH. So winters will become cold and snowy. And most likely we'll be getting snow before thanksgiving. My question is what to do for the hens to protect them when...
I noticed the other day one of my chickens had black on her comb. Was wondering if it's mites or something else. And how to treat it. Hopefully it's an okay picture. I can get another one when I get home later tonight.
On Friday morning I opened the coop for the girls to go in their run like every morning and all six of the girls seemed fine. They were all eating and their activity was normal. I had something I needs to do for church and my husband didn't get home till late that night 12ish and he went to...
