I have a little silkie hen that is a little over a year old now. She is very small compared to my other hens and always has been. I noticed latley that she is looking smaller and smaller. As I went to feed them tonight I noticed that when she ate she would lift her head and make a strange back...
OK, so I have a silkie hen (about 6 months old) I noticed that for the longest time one of her eyes was really watery. She closed it often but never kept it closed for long periods of time. This moring she seemed to have some trouble finding her way out of the coop (the poor dear). I inspected...
OK, I wasnt really sure where to post this so i put it here! So I have just recently aquired a rabbit today..... I have no secure place to put it but the lovely chicken run. The chickens have informed me that they are NOT happy about this! They run and flap away in fear whenever the rabbit...

Ok I just had my 2-month-old chicks (well I guess they're not really chicks anymore) Out side and before I realized it, it was pouring rain! They dont have a coop yet and I heard them cheeping so I went out and quickly gathered up the soggy chicks and brought them in. I dried them off as best I...
HELP! OK, I have 9 silkie chicks that are about one to two weeks and one of them is acting really sleepy and lethargic. I have been giving her a little sugar water and the heat is the right temp. in the brooder. She doesnt seem to be pecking at the food. She kind of stands off to the side by...

OK, I'm looking at my 9 chicks. I KNOW one is a roo because of its tail (and how big it is). I thought roosters were the ones that actually had a tail feather thing..... not hens, is that true? and, I had someone tell me that if you hold the chick and tilt it away from you and it puts its tail...
Ok, I'm pretty sure I have a rooster Silkie. Its a little bigger than the other silkies, its wing growth is faster and it doesnt appear to have a slight poof on its head like the other three. SO I was wondering, how loud are silkie roosters? I cant keep a roo unless it is quiet... so.... is...
Ok, So I got my chicks when they were about a day old and I did feather sexing (2 layers of feathers= girl one layer= boy?) And I heard that you couldnt do it after they were 3 days old. I was wondering why that was because I'm supposed to get chicks next week that will be older than 3 days and...
My chicks are about 3 days old. In the brooder I put down news paper and then paper towels over it. I put a little tray of food out for them (which they scatter all over) I've heard about putting shavings down but, I dont want the chicks to eat the shavings. So what do I do?
I know they have to be like 3 months before I have them live outside but how old should they be before I let them run around a little or enjoy the outside?
OK, we just got some day-old chicks yesterday. I started looking at their wings today and noticed that one of the chick's wings looked like its feathers had been plucked off! It seem like they all look a little like this but she is the worst. I have pics below. Is this normal? What should I do...
I wrote a post yesterday about my chick adventures. I wasnt able to post pics at the time but now I can! so here they are!
They are all silkie chicks!
We have 3 buff and 1 white and gray. This is one of the little buffs
They have recently found that they like SHINEY things, including...
Ok, Im going to make a short story longer. lol We have been trying to get silkie chicks for WEEKS! We've been trying to get a hold of this feed store that was supposed to get chicks the past 3 weeks but they never came in! After being dicouraged this past Wednesday a twinkle of hope fluttered...
Soon-to-be chicken owner, but have had horses all my life, which is why I'm familiar with West Nile. (It is almost always fatal to horsed). We vacc. our horses every year. But it occurred to me, that we have "sentinel" chickens placed down by the lake here in our county to monitor this virus. I...
We are newbies, in the process of getting some silkie chicks (we hope tomorrow they will come into the feed store). But I saw an ad in our local classifieds for BBS silkie chicks and I'm wondering what they are (I called the ad, but no answer). I'm aware of black, white, blue and splash...
We don't even have them yet, hopefully they will arrive tomorrow, but from everything I have heard and the few pics I have seen, I am expecting some really tiny chicks. I would like them to be as "tame" as possible, (their main purpose is to be cute pets, LOL), I would love to be able to hold...
