Respiratory Infection? What do you think?

I have an “older” hen, 6ish years old that sounds like she’s having a hard time breathing and is making a small sneezing sound every so often. I can’t upload a video but it almost sounds like she’s wheezing in and then wheezing out. We noticed it today and none of the other ladies seem to be...

Broody and 8 babies from TSC

So we have our first broody, a Buff Orpington. She is a 3 YO in a flock of 7 (no rooster). We recently decided to rotate our flock out because our egg production has been low (4 per day on average, I got 2 today) so I purchased 8 babies at TSC today. I don't really have a way of separating the...

Maintaining a poop board in cold climates

So, it's still a little chill here in northern MI.....so I'm asking for a friend.....my friend would like to know, have you ever been hit in the face by a piece of frozen poop that you are trying to scrape off of the poop board? 🤢

    Molting, what to feed

We have 7 chickens. 1 hen, 6 pullers. Our hen is molting for the first time. Should I switch the whole flock to a feather fixer type feed or just stick with something like a 20% protein grower feed with oyster shell on the side? thanks wise chicken people of the internet! Lol

Help me with layout ideas please :)

We have an 8x10 shed we’ll be converting in to a coop soon. I have a couple layouts in my head but what would your dream layout look like in this space? :) We have 7 girls right now. I doubt we’ll ever have more than 12. Door in is on an 8ft side with an electric outlet next to it, door to...

Finally got an egg from one of my EE pullets

We have two EE pullets that are about 22-23 weeks old and one of them FINALLY laid an egg! They are suppose to lay blue eggs and while I feel this one is more green, I'm so EXCITED!!!! Very cool! One picture in natural light and the other next to our other treasures :) I think we have 4...

    I think I have a laying issue

Last week one of our pullets layed a completely shell less, membrane less egg. It looked like someone cracked an egg in the coop. The yolk was intact and no shell prices so I don’t think it’s an egg eater. Today one of our Easter eggers has been sitting in the run (even though everyone is...

Cedar trees in run, bad idea?

Hi there! We'll be moving in the fall and I was scoping out areas for my coop and run. The property has an old, excellent condition shed on the property that would convert to a great coop, it has power already and it's in a good location. However there is a group of cedar trees directly behind...

    Wobbly legs?

I have a 13 or 14 week old pullet that has wobbly legs. I haven't been able to get a good video of her but can try again after the rain today. She's wobbled since about 4 or 5 weeks old (I think), tends to "sit" a lot and will stumble a little when she walks/runs. She's otherwise normal, eats...

    No more chickens for us....

My husband and I agreed to a small flock of 6. We ended up with 7 ;) mainly due to predators and rebuilding the flock. Jokes on him when he sees this beautiful guy I brought home! Any breed guesses? :gig

    Treating dirt after moving coop?

So we moved our coop over the weekend. Completely cleaned up the spot where it was sitting, scooping, raking etc. Is there something we should treat the dirt with to help ready it for grass and eliminate the remaining odor?

    Why is integration so stressful!?!

For me...LOL....the chicks seem to be doing fine but every time our one older pullet goes after the 5 week olds I cringe! Flock: 1 older pullet about 10 months, 6 chicks at 5 weeks. We've had a few 10 min to 1 hour integrations but today is the first full day. The 2 buff's are being picked...

    Ready for the great outdoors?

I know there are a ton of posts on this kind of thing :) I'm looking for some guidance due to location and inexperience. Our chicks are somewhere between 4-5 weeks old and pretty well feathered. I'm in NE MI and the nights are still a little chilly here, high 30's. Daytime ranges from mid...

Question on moving 4 week old chicks and heat sources

Hi all. Our chicks are about 4 weeks old and we need to move them out of their tub in to a larger container. My husband got a water heater box and we're going to set it up in the garage with sand to keep the dust down. We've weaned the chicks off the heat lamp and have just a Thermo peep...

New babies! And Thermostat-Peep Heated Pad?

We have 6 new babies in our house! As sad as I am to say that we lost 4 hens two weeks ago to a weasel, I excited to start the journey again. I went with a mix of 2 Americana’s, 2 Buff Orginton’s and 2 Bared Rock crosses. (I know my spelling is off, on my mobile) Anyway, I asked the woman that...

    4 Dead Hens

So our coop "was" what I thought fairly predator proof. Yet, somehow over the weekend something got in around 5:30 AM (I think) and killed 4 of our 5 hens. 2 had no outward injuries, 1 had a wound near the back of her head and 1 had the head completely detached with feathers pulled back to show...

Help me pick the rooster to keep?

Short back story: We incubated 12 eggs, 11 hatched and we got 4 roosters. We plan on keeping one rooster and 4-5 hens and I'm not sure which rooster to keep. They're 14 weeks old so it's time to make a decision. The chicks are a brahma cross. Rooster #1 - is a brahma/leghorn cross, he's risen...

What age do you switch to a layer feed?

I know the feed bag has an age range on it but I want to know what people in the real world prefer :) My local TSC doesn't sell "All Flock" so right now I have my one laying hen and 7 pullets on Grower with some oyster shell on the side. I'd like to get them in to a layer feed soon but don't...

    Critique My Coop

We’ve been working on a bigger coop for our flock. Ultimately we’ll have no more than 6 chickens (which is a little tight for this coop but we’ll have 5 in here to start with our roo in his own bachelor pad for the next year and evaluate at that point) It’s 4x4 and height is about 3 ft angling...

    Gender guesses, mixed breed

Hi all! Our chicks are just shy of 9 weeks! Just like kids, I can't believe how fast they grow :) We've got a few that are definitely boys, a few that are definitely girls and a couple that I'm not quite sure. I tried to get some good shots but they weren't cooperating and I'm sure I have a...
