Silver Penciled Rocks ... which pattern is correct?

I have two distinct types of Silver Penciled Rocks. The first (right photo) have a much more defined penciling and their legs are more of the 'dusky yellow'. Much more black and white. The most recent group have a much more soft penciling, yellow legs, which I know is correct and a beautiful...

Processed roosters turned dark in the freezer!

I've got a freezer full of processed roosters that have turned red/purplish once frozen. I took them to the same facility I've been using for several years; I've watched them and they 'usually' do a very nice job. These birds looked absolutely normal once home; I kept one out, brined it and...

Please help me understand Lavender Isabel

I purchased hatching eggs from a breeder, described as lavender isabel. I hatched three; an isabel pullet, a lavender pullet and a lavender cockerel. I was expecting all to be isabel colored? If I were to pair my isabel pullet with the lavender cockerel next year, what would I expect to get...

Help me understand lavender isabel please

I hatched three chicks from a breeder who called them 'lavender isabel'. One pullet is what I call isabel, one pullet lavender and a cockerel is lavender. His saddle feathers are coming in a lighter 'cream' color. I'd like to cross them; would I get lavender, isabel, or a mess? I assumed they...

Blue laced red wyandotte crossbreeding; lacing

I ended up keeping a blue laced red wyandotte crossbreed rooster that has really nice form and coloring, but not much lacing at the breast. If I were to breed him to my black and splash hens (full blood), what would I expect in more correctly laced chicks? I understand the bbs breeding; just...

Prettiest easter eggers .... what's the breeding of your favorites?

I'm drawing up breeding pens for next spring (already :)) and would like to create some pretty easter eggers. What are your favorite crosses? In particular, I like those with blue hackles. Show off your pretties!! I have both white(black) and blue ameraucanas roosters, and LOTS of colors of hens

    Biefelder cockerel isn't barred?

I hatched 3 bielefelder chicks from eggs purchased through a breeder that I won't name. The two pullets look correct ... these are my first of this breed. The cockerel is very large already for his age, but has absolutely no barring. Got a few darker red feathers and some grey in his tail...

    New Hampshire x Penciled Rock?

Just wondering if anyone has ever tried a New Hampshire x Penciled Rock cross. Should be a good layer, no different really than a black star, but would they be all black? I have both these breeds, and could do the cross either way if it matters.

Blue birchen marans rooster; which to keep ?

I've just started with blue birchen marans; purchased a splash rooster and crossed him with my black copper hens. Understanding I'm not into showing or even understand SOP here, just want to enjoy these beauties and raise a few more without keeping poor stock. I crossed to bcm for a darker egg...

    Cream legbar cross?

This baby hatched this morning. I'm pretty sure it's a new hampshire red egg. Is it possible that it's a cream legbar cross, and female? Has a straight comb, and the stripe of a legbar female

White leghorn chick growing in grey wingfeathers?

I hatched a chick from my one white leghorn hen. The chick is now two weeks old, and continually gets more grey in its coloring. The wing feathers are more of a silver grey than anything else. My roosters are white ameraucana (white chicks on leghorn), cream legbar (white chicks as well on...

    Ameraucana leg color question

I have a blue ameraucana cockerel that I raised from my blue hen and white rooster. All the blacks have nice, dark slate legs. This blue's legs are much more light. I've been thinking it was a crossbred, but really that's impossible. Thoughts? Why would the leg color be more of a grey?

Recessive White Rooster, babies are blue?

I hatched a small batch of ameraucanas ... the rooster is recessive white; I raised him and he was a smoky white baby. The hens paired him with were black (2), blue (1) and lavender (1). The lavenders hatched to black as I expected, however all the rest are blue. Not that I'm unhappy, just...

Tumor on neck of young chicken

I moved a group of CCL's this morning, and noticed a large tumor (about the size of a lemon) on the neck of a young cockerel. He feels fine ... and this must have come up quickly as I've not noticed it before. The mass is not really 'attached' to anything, and is firm. Any thoughts? Pics...
