    Splash Orpington Hen or Roo?

I bought this bird in May as a 5 week old Splash Oripington. This bird is at least 24 weeks old. 'It' has not laid a single egg, but neither has it crowed. I thought it was a hen until those saddle feathers came in, very late. Now I am not so sure. Any thoughts? Here 'it' is from another view

    humidity or another problem?

Today is hatch day. I have had to help two eggs already as the membrane had totally encased them. The gap between the egg and the membrane was huge. So far the chick are ok. I opened the pip area carefully for the next one so it can breath. Any idea why this is happening. My humidity is...

Very Low Humidy (20%) Dry Incubation Question

Hi I just found out, via two hygrometers that our room humidity is only 20%. Is this too low? Do I need to add water? I only set the eggs yesterday. I am using a forced air LG with egg turner. I have two thermometers which show we are happy at 99.5 steady, but I am concerned about the...

First Hen gone broody - do I need to do anything?

Hi One of my Buff Orpingtons has gone broody with, get this, several polish eggs. She seems very proud and happy. The best part is she went broody March 1, so dates are easy too. I have left food and water nearby the nest box so she doesn't have to go far. My question is, what do I do once...

Why have I lost 9 birds in the last six months?

Hello I have had chickens for about 10 months now. I have one who will be gone by morning. No signs prior to lethargy last night, vaccinated against Mareks, she could walk until today, so I am perplexed. My primary question is that I will have now lost 9 out of 25 birds since July. They...

Cockerel has earned the right to stay

Hi all We have a Polish cockerel 'Rod' who has come into his own (he is about 22 weeks old). He is young and a little aggressive with the girls, but he is starting to show why he is also earning his keep. At night he sits at the pop door and waits for everyone to come in. But what really...

    Blood on first egg?

Should I be worried there was a little blood on a first egg today? I have several girls just starting to lay and this is definitely a first egg. But I have never seen blood before.

Free feed from Agway with Carhart purchase

I have three grown sons. They love Carhart clothing. This week in our area Agway is giving away one 50lb bag of feed (any they make) for every $50 Carhart you purchase at their store. I bought my sons Christmas presents and got enough feed/cracked corn for a few months. Each bag of feed is...

    No eggs until Spring?

Hi I am new to chickens. All my pullets were born since April. I realize those that were born in late July will not lay until the spring. I have 5 born in April that are laying well these past three months. I have 10 others born in April and May who are not laying yet, I believe. 9 of...

    Amazed at pullet empathic behavior

I am just floored. I have pullets that are 23 weeks and younger. I have 2 18 week old Black Polish, Elodie an Anaise, who recently lost their cockerel friend. Anaise has been in isolation but on the mend (curly toe paralysis). I put her in her cage in the run with the other chickens so she...

Medication packets life expectancy once opened?

Hi A few questions I have not been able to find answers to: 1. I bought some Corid for Cocci a few months back. I put the bag in a zip lock bag. Is it still good? Should I have refrigerated it? I need some now for the next batch of chicks (I apparently have a lot of cocci in my grass as...

Bear tried to climb over fence, Pyr chased it away

I have 19 chicks/pullets in a secure coop and enclosed pen with chicken wire and 2x4 welded wire. I have a good hardware cloth apron around everywhere. My husband thought I was crazy to have so much protection. I have all the parts for the electric fence but everyone in my neighborhood...

HI This is my first time with receiving day old chicks from a hatchery. They are now 5 days old. I have a thermometer at their level in the brooder. When the brooder light give the thermometer a reading of 95 they all go away from the light and sit in a corner. It is a red light I got at...

    Lost little Elvis this morning.....

My 10 week old golden laced Polish, Elvis, a pullet (long story about the name) did not wake up today. She had been paralyzed for at least two weeks and was in the house isolated and being given lots of TLC. Sadly although she seemed to be recovering, she started getting very lethargic a few...

Sadly lost Elvis: Is it Mareks? Why only 1 bird affected?

Hi I have a 12-13 week old pullet who appears to have Marek's. Over the past month she has slowed down, starting eating/drinkning while laying down only, and generally keeping to herself. She is the bottom of the pecking order. She has paralysis on the left side in both the wing and leg. She...

    Chicks divide into groups?

Hi My chicks are older, into their teens, and I have noticed a behavior I have not seen mentioned. They are definitely divided into two groups I call Company A and Company B. Company A consists of the 6 higher ranking girls. They are the first to everything. Company B are the 5 lower ranked...

    Paint on feathers?

Hi I have chicks that were put in a new pen. We discovered the hard way that some of the paint was not dry. One of my 10 week old BOs has paint on her legs and some of her feathers. Should I leave it alone or does it need to come off (how??). I think it will wear off naturally. Any...
