A coworker dropped off some hens today. A couple of elderly ladies that would have otherwise been stew in a few days. He said they were labeled as Ameraucana when he got them, one in particular is definitely not:
I plan to get a better picture in the morning. She has a faint barred pattern on...
I have a 4 year old Silkie rooster (Larry) that just got back from the vet. He was diagnosed with a severe respiratory infection (and possibly worms? He got a dewormer too). He lost weight very rapidly in the few days I had to wait for an available avian vet—he is only 1.7 pounds now. He's been...
Got some bantam chicks with top knots and silver lacing on the wings. Thought they were silver laced polish at first but the chick pictures online don't match. They have pink legs and what looks like single combs. They are hatchery stock if that makes a difference.
I don't know who messed up, be it the store or the post office but a box of 25 chicks arrived—half of them DOA. 12 chicks were put in the sick tank yesterday and this is the only one left. I'm guessing at least 4 days old when the post office dropped them off. She is very thin, you can easily...
My eldest bird in the flock is a Midnight Majesty Maran named Jessie who will be turning 5 on July 20th. She's always been the top hen in the pecking order and has maintained that position all her life, earning her the nickname "The Matriarch".
Supposedly MMMs live for 5-8 years, but I haven't...
Came home from work on the 26th to see one of my hens injured. I'm thinking she might've flown into the neighbor's yard and been attacked by their dog. Picked out the debris and made a saline solution to flush out the wound and applied a generic triple antibiotic ointment (no pain relief).
The...
Rhoad Island Red. 15 weeks old, will be turning 4 months old on Sunday 24th.
I realized today that they're older than I thought, time sure flies. I thought Mars was a roo but when I realized how old he was...my last RIR roo had a way bigger comb/wattles at his age but that just might be a...
Turkey poult from work that got banished to the sick tank yesterday. About 5 days old. He's been shaking like this nonstop and can't really walk and ends up getting stuck on his back.
Any idea what's going on? Neurological issue? Disease?
Welcome to the °˖✧ Starstruck Silkie Shack ✧˖°
Featuring stories and pictures of my wonderful silkies! There are still some standard chickens in the flock but the forum will be mostly for the silkies✨
Introductions:
1. Larry (♂️) - Hatched September 4th, 2021. He got a cut at the base of his...
In early June I got a group of 20 silkie chicks. At about a week old they contracted a particularly aggressive strain of fowl pox that ended up having a 55% mortality rate. I still have 2 of the remaining 9 chicks. They appear to have stunted growth.
(White female = Creampuff, buff male = Big...
A coworker had a 6 month old barred rock hen that was scalped by a Jersey Giant/Leghorn rooster. She has been sperated inside the house, wound cleaned/drained, treated with Neosporin (WITHOUT pain reliever) and microcyn poultry spray at least twice daily. This incident occurred 3 days ago, here...
My 2 year old Turken, Vinnie, passed away today
At around 7:30am I fed them and she was acting as normal as everyone else, trailing behind me with the rest of the flock in the breakfast parade to the food container. It was 47°F this morning so I kept the teen chicks in the brooder until it...
There's been some dispute with a relative about what kind of hawk this is
Edit: a link to the thread of the whole story for those that are curious - https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/hawk-attack.1597508/
Had my second hawk attack today (last one was almost 2 years ago). Had a 2 month old silkie with a single pinhole puncture wound and a OEGB hen with a few little cuts and a bloody eye (caused by the cut at the corner of her eye, no actual damage to the eye suspected); will keep a close eye on...
Recently took in a mystery bantam chick with a deformed leg. A few toes are fused together and I suspect the same for their hock/ankle. They get around on one leg just fine currently and stuff their crop full exactly like any other chick. Just turned 1 week old. I plan on watching them closely...
