One of my young hens seems sick. Yesterday I noticed that she was standing by herself. And again this morning. I just got home from work and checked her, and she looks the same - just standing there - not too puffed, but maybe a little droopy.
I picked her up, and when I did she started...
And I'm so glad I did! I've been experimenting a little. It was on our deck. the night that I moved it - the temp on the deck was 31 degrees. I moved the unit into the coop (it's at the end of a roost, so same level as the girls), and the coop temp that night only got down to 42 degrees...
After 2 1/2 weeks of the "old" girls next to the "new" girls, I finally opened things up and they are together.
There were a couple of short chases, but NOTHING like I expected. :-)
It will be interesting to see what happens at roosting time tonight....
I was so worried for nothing (?)
We recently finished our pallet coop and moved the girls in. I have been so excited and proud of our new coop - almost to the point of showing off :-)
But the reality is that the coop sucks. The rain has been relentless. When I opened the pop-doors this morning - I could see part of the...
ok, so I moved my 4 adult hens to the new coop on Sunday - after dark (cuz that's the only way I can catch one of them :).
On Monday afternoon, I moved my 8 - 8 week old chicks out as well. They are in the same coop - with a wire "fence" between them. And they share a run - still with a wire...
I think it's fascinating that my "chicks" segratgate themselves, in a manner of speaking.
I have 4 different breeds - a couple of each, and in the brooder box, the Ameraucanas stay together, the RIRs stay together, the Barred Rocks stay together - they all seem to sit with their "own", if you...
At my old job, my boss always made this suggestion to folks who asked about portable fencing.
Keep in mind - this is NOT predator proof.
I made several of these and have been using them every single day - for one thing or another.
Use PVC pipe (there are different sizes, so pick the one you...
The "chicks" are going out, and the "grown-ups" are moving over. I have a little more work to do, but today is the day!
~We finished the fencing for the run yesterday - just have to add a gate today.
~We got the inside door in place - the one to divide the youngsters from the biddys.
~We got...
When I worked at a feed store, we would advise people to feed their young birds a 17% (protein) "all purpose" crumble (this is AFTER the medicated starter), unitl they started to lay - then start layer feed...
I have 8 youngsters ready to join the existing flock very soon. When I put them all...
I knew better. But, I've never had any of my chicks (or chickens) like to sit on my shoulder. I have one now. She's about 8-9 weeks old - Barred Rock. I babied her because she was smaller than all the others, and something happened to one of her toes right after I got her. So I spoiled her...
These are Barred Rocks. I THINK about 6-7 weeks..(?)
I'm not sure about this one. I'm a little concerned it's a boy :
This next one looks like a pullet to me, but I'm no expert!
They are the same age, and the 1st one has more development in the comb..And stands like a hen
What do you...
I have 4 adult hens - about 2 years old now. I have 8 pullets almost ready to go out.
I'm building a new coop/run which will house ALL of them.
my plan is this (PLEASE tell me your thoughts as I've never done this b4):
The new coop/run should be ready next weekend. After it's ready, that...
Not sure her age - they didn't know at the store. I'm guessing about 5 weeks. (Please don't say clip it off - it's very tender, and I don't think I can do that)... Hoping that the dark part will die and fall off? wishful thinking?
I wasn't going to go through the trouble of brooding chicks again. Decided I'd just get pullets next time.
Well, that all changed (good thing hubby made me keep my supplies - "just in case", he said) this morning when
I learned that I can get Lavender Orpingtons chicks in February...
I will be moving my flock on Monday morning. I intend to 'catch' them after dark on Sunday night, put them into large dog crates (2 in each), with bedding, food and water. Let them sleep there Sunday night, then leave for the new place on Monday morning. The trip is about 2 1/2 hours, the...
