Checked on my girls today and the top girl is missing most of the feathers right around the front of the neck under her waddle. No blood, no signs of pests...Searched the run and noticed in one of the corners of the run behind a barrier there is a pile of black feathers (shes the only black...
Hi Folks,
I recently lost my Barred Rock Hen which left me with 1 lone lady. Before she passed I was planning to wait until spring to add to the family but now that I am down to 1 knew I couldn't wait. A friend was willing to part with 4 of his ISA Brown pullets that are somwhere between 10-12...
My PRB hasn't layed in 2 days and I have started to worry. This is her first fall and she is about 8 months old so i though maybe she was starting to molt. Noticed her butt was looking "wet" and she does not have her usual energy and personality. I checked her vent this afternoon and it looks...
Purchased these 3 back in late Feb/early March. I am feeling confident I have 3 ladies but I figured they were old enough know for some of the more experienced chicken folks to confirm for me. They are 15 weeks old, give or take a few days. No crowing from anyone and I do not see any hackle...
Hi all,
I have 1 barred rock and 2 asian blacks that were sold as pullets. They are now 8-9 weeks old (the Asian's are a week older than the BR). Looking/hoping for confirmation that I indeed have 3 pullets. Thanks
Hi all,
We have 3 new chicks. They are somewhere between 5-6 weeks old as best I know. They were sold as pullets but were also sold as a PBR and 2 Asian Blacks. I am failry certain the third chic is some other breed bc she has an extra toe and black legs. Considering the breed seeming to be...
One of our 3-4 week old chicks (Barred Rock) seems to be not as active as the others and has her eyes closed quite a bit. She doesn't have the same vigor her sisters do. My wife said she seems sad and we are getting a bit worried there is something wrong. We have seen her eating and drinking...
Hi All,
A couple of weeks ago we went to local nursery who get their birds from a hatchery. I purchased what was sold as 2 Plymouth Barred Rocks and 2 Asian Black chicks. All 4 were sold as sexed pullets. The 2 PBR seem to be as advertised however the 2 Asian Blacks look fairly different from...
Morning All, was busy starting our new run this weekend and am too excited not to share the progress. Pics below...it is about 12x9 7ft tall on the high side and 6ft tall on the low side. Getting the footprint level was a real pain thanks to the Carolina clay and the slope was about 18 inches...
Unfortunate event this fall, a family of racoons climbed up my run fence, amazingly removed the wire "roof", and proceeded to greedily kill all 4 of my chickens without even having a meal out of them. So now that spring is approaching, I am rebuilding. Previous run was simply 1/4 wire, T...
Hi All,
Bought these 2 "Asian Black Pullets" from TSC about 6 weeks ago. One has a larger comb than the other and has been that way since about week 2. I can't see any clear difference in their feathering but am not familiar with this type of chick. I purchased these under the thought they...
I have 2 Black Asian chicks about 4-5 weeks old. This week we moved them into the Coop/Run with our 2 EE's that are 10-11 weeks. We still have them in the brooder to keep them separate and get used to each other. We are moving the brooder into the run in the morning and coop at night. This...
Got these 2 babies to add to my flock. They are now ~2 weeks old.
Ive read a ton of anecdotal posts on this “breed” as well as mislabeled bins at tsc. Just curious if these girls look like they are actually asian blacks. Ive seen several posts here where people have ended up with barred rocks...
I have read a good bit on tendencies of where hens want to lay and using fake eggs etc in order to encourage using the boxes. I guess i have a more basic question...i have 4 pullets i expect to start laying around october. At what point prior to that shiuld i be setting up the nesting boxes with...
I have 2 7-8 week old Cockerels that are in need of a home. They have been raised in a high touch home to this point and are used to being handled and fed by hand. Both are very social and friendly to this point. I am in NC. Pics below

7-8 week old babies. Pretty certain 2 are pullets and one is a cockerel. The fourth one we are uncertain. It looks like a cockerel next to the pullets abd looks like a pullet next to the cockerel. Thanks for the help!
My buddy got this from a “mixed” bin at southern states. Hes holding out hope but ive been telling him its a cockerel. Thoughts? What breed do u think it is? Thanks!
I have 4, 6 week old chicks. They have been outside in their coop for a little over a week now. The last few evenings they have gone into the coop after dusk with no encouragement however, i noticed this evening that they are sitting in the corner of the coop on the shavings and not roosting. I...
Hi Folks,
I am new to the forum and to chics. Had a friend hatch 4 chics for me and they are now ~5 weeks old and I am confident i have 1 cockerel and likely a second one. I can't keep a rooster so will be taking them back to my friend so he can keep or place them in a good home. We really...
